LG Sunset Review - Tracfone GSM 4G LTE Smartphone

Review of the LG L33L Sunset from Tracfone with 4G LTE

This post shares the latest details on the LG Sunset from Tracfone. The Sunset is the second Android smartphone from Tracfone that uses GSM service. It is the first smartphone that is 4G LTE capable. This review by TracfoneReviewer, while cover the important specs and features, and include a comparison to other devices, and where to buy the phone.

tracfone 4g lte sunset
LG Sunset with 4G LTE
Tracfone has released the first 4G LTE capable device for use with their prepaid service and it is called the LG Sunset (LG L33L). It is also unique being only the second Android device available for use with GSM networks. The LG Sunrise L16G (hopefully we won't get confused), is also a GSM capable device released by Tracfone, but with a smaller screen, lesser specs and no 4G.

Update - It appears that Tracfone is also retailing the LG Destiny (L21G), which is exactly the same as the Sunset as far as we can tell.

For those who might be unfamiliar with Tracfone, they are a wireless prepaid service provider who also offers cell phones to use on their low cost service. Tracfone contracts with major service providers like AT&T and Verizon to use their networks for Tracfone prepaid service.

Tracfone also allows users to bring their own phones to Tracfone, recently adding GSM devices to their list of CDMA smartphones approved for use. Visit our Tracfone BYOP page for more information on that.

Over the last few years Tracfone has steadily closed the gulf that had opened between the phones they offered, and the phones available to consumers on other networks. At first we got very basic Android devices that were seriously lacking. But slowly more CDMA smartphones with better specs appeared.

And now Tracfone takes another step forward in closing the gulf (or, at least, not letting it get wider), but releasing the first 4G LTE capable device.

Tracfone had already been allowing customers to bring 4G LTE capable devices to use with Tracfone BYOP by purchasing an Activation Kit, but the LG Sunset is the first phone available directly through Tracfone.

Well, enough about the background details, let's take a look at this Android smartphone and see how it stacks up.

  • 8 GB Internal Memory (about 3-4 GB use-able)
  • Battery: 10 hrs Talk Time, 10 Days Standby, 1900 mAh battery
A great list of features and specs for the Sunset, but does it remind you of another phone? It should! It has the same features and specs as the LG Power (L22C) and LG Destiny (L21G) except for the 4G LTE connectivity. In case you were wondering, the 'L' in the Sunset's L33L name is for LTE. (However, the LG L21G is also listed as featuring 4G speed).

Let's get into some of the things we like and dislike about the LG Sunset.

LG Sunset Review - Likes and Dislikes

We will begin with the features we like best.

LG Sunset Likes
lg sunset review gsm
LG Sunset front, side and back
The Sunset is a really great device, so it is easy to run down a list of the features we are excited about in this device. The screen size is the same as the LG Power and LG Ultimate 2, at 4.5" which is a convenient size for most people.

Just like the Power, the LG Sunset comes with 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Internal Memory and a 1.2 Ghz Quad Core Processor. These are all very adequate and about the best you can get from Tracfone at this time. The Internal Memory is 8 GB, but closer to half of that is actually use-able. 4 GB is enough space for a variety of apps, but you won't be able to fit your music or video library on the phone without an External Micro SD card.

Android 5.0.1 is another prominent feature of the LG Sunset. If you prefer this newer version of Android, you will be happy to see it on the Sunset.

The biggest feature on the LG Sunset is the ability to connect to 4G LTE service through AT& GSM cell towers. Tracfone has contracted with AT&T to use their existing network of service to run Tracfone devices. With 4G LTE you get faster download speeds when surfing the internet on your phone so less time waiting for a video to load.

Previously, Tracfone only had Android smartphones available on Verizon CDMA networks, limiting consumers who didn't have good Verizon coverage in their area. Now you have another option in AT&T GSM service.

We are very excited about the 4G LTE feature this phone offers, because it is another step forward for Tracfone, getting better and better devices to use on their low cost network.

For a quick comparison of all the Android devices on Tracfone, visit our Android Tracfone List.

Now we will cover a few negatives for the LG Sunset

LG Sunset Dislikes
While there is not a lot we've found about the LG Sunset we don't like, there are a couple of features we would like to see improved.

The rear camera on the Sunset is fairly good with 5MP and autofocus. However the front camera is only 0.3 MP. This is adequate for video chatting, but might be lacking if you started taking photos in challenging lighting. We would want this phone to come with a better camera.

Internal Memory on the LG Sunset is modest, with 8 GB total, but about half of that used by the Operating System. This leaves around 4 GB for storing everything you plan to load on your device. There is an external Micro SD card slot, but not everything can be transferred. Tracfone customers have been longing for a device with better internal memory, and hopefully we will get something with closer to 16 GB in the near future.

Finally, none of the Android devices from Tracfone can be used with Tracfone Promo Codes. You do get Triple Minutes for Life, and minutes are split into text/data/calling, however, promo codes often help many users get enough minutes for their needs.

That covers the main points for the LG Sunset. Remember, you can also check out our Review of the LG Power for additional details and comments, because these phones share many of the same features.

LG Sunset Compared to the LG Ultimate 2, LG Power and BYOP Devices

So how does the Sunset compare to some of the other phones offered by Tracfone?

Well, as you should be aware of, the LG Sunset is basically the same as the LG Power and LG Destiny except for the 4G LTE on GSM networks. If GSM coverage is better in your area, then this phone is your best choice.

Compared to the LG Ultimate 2, the Sunset has slightly better specs, like a quad core processor, but abuot the same amount of internal memory. The only reason to switch from the Ultimate 2 would be if you preferred 4G LTE coverage on GSM networks.

As you can probably tell from this review, the main feature for the Sunset is GSM 4G LTE coverage. So if you would rather have GSM coverage, this phone is one of the best options currently available from Tracfone.

If you're not quite sure about what GSM means, visit our guide to the Difference between GSM and CDMA.

So how does the LG Sunset compare to phones you can bring to Tracfone BYOP's GSM service? Well, as you should expect, bringing your own device to Tracfone allows you to access many more options, and most of them are better than the LG Sunset. The Moto G (2nd Gen), LG U2, Samsung Galaxy S3 and other devices in this range can be found for around $200 and will generally come with better and/or larger screens, more internal memory, and perhaps similar or slightly better other features. But if you want to avoid the possible hassles of finding and activating a device on Tracfone BYOP, the Sunset is a great alternative.

Visit our Tracfone BYOP page which also includes a list of compatible devices, and lots of comments from uses with their experiences and questions. You can also see our recent post on where to find a GSM Activation Kit for Tracfone BYOP if you're ready to give it a try.

Conclusion and Where to Find the LG Sunset

We hope this helps you gain a better idea of how the LG L33L Sunset compares to other devices available. We would recommenced it if you are looking for a new device and prefer GSM coverage. We also expect Tracfone to continue to release new devices for GSM, however we don't know what kind of schedule this will follow, or if the devices will be any better than the Sunset.

Overall the LG Sunset is a good device, and a great option if you are looking to buy a smartphone int he near future. We haven't seen the Sunset available on the Tracfone website, but it is available through several other third party retailers.

The LG Sunset was offered for a limited time on HSN for $130 with a 400 Minute/1 Year card, but the price has increased to $150.

You can also find the LG Sunset with a 1 Year/400 Minute card on eBay for $150

We haven't seen the Sunset anywhere else yet, but will update as more buying options become available.

There are plenty of LG Sunset cases on Amazon, because the Sunset shares the same form as the Destiny, Power, Leon and several more devices.

You can take a look at the Interactive Tutorial for the LG Sunset to learn more about how the phone works.

If you're new to Android, you might find our List of the Best Android Apps a good place to start and see all the different possibilities.

Another con would be the 480 x 854 scrren resolution, which many would consider sub-par for a 4.5 inch screen!

Warning to Tracfone Upgraders!
I purchased the LG L33L Sunset from HSN web site. I attempted to port my phone # and minutes from a Samsung Galaxy Centura to the LG L33L Sunset and it failed. I contacted support and they said they do NOT allow you to transfer your phone # and minutes from Verizon phones to AT&T network phones. The LG L33L is a great phone but do not think you will be able to transfer from an older Verizon Android.

Hi Peter! Recently added a Galaxy Note II on Tracfone via the 4g lte BYOP. The process was fairly smooth and I transfered my number from my BYOPP iPhone 4. This is probably the best phonefor under $150 to be activated on tracfone. Lovingmy Galaxy Note II :)

Anonymous said...

That is garbage about not letting you transfer from Verizon side to AT&T portion of Tracfone. I too have Tracfone Verizon and it took Tracfone 10 years of me complaining telling them that i had way better coverage with the AT&T side than Verizon. It is a win for Tracfone to let you do this because you will be using more minutes thus giving Tracfone more revenue! Sometimes i don't think their management thinks of what the customer is trying to tell them they want! Over past year it has cost Tracfone too, losing nearly 1/2 million customers! So what do they do for their bad publicity, create Total Wireless, a new company, lower the rates for it's service and finally after people complaining for 5 years now, bring GSM smartphones and BYOP to their company. Tracfone should have listened 5 years ago and it cost them! How long will they suffer the costly setback of not letting Verizon Tracfone units not be transferred to AT&T ones? Meanwhile, it will cost them!!!! Get smart Tracfone!

Anonymous said...

I was able to transfer my minutes, etc. from the Verizon side to the AT&T side of Tracfone with no trouble at all (on 8/10/15). I think whoever you talked to in customer support didn't know what they were doing.

Did they use Gorilla Glass for the LG Sunset? I like my GG on my Moto E.

With the Galaxy Note II, are you stuck with Ginger Bread 2.3 or does TracFone upgrade phones to Lollipop 5.0 + or greater for your android operating system. All the Galaxy Note II's I see for sale advertise ol' 2.3 operating system.

Regarding the camera, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it takes HD and FHD video.

When using a GMS phone, how do tell which carrier you would be on, AT&T or T-Mobile. I don't have good coverage with T-Mobile. By the way, this is an awesome website.

I have a friend from overseas who uses tracfone when she travels to the USA because it fits her needs perfectly. She is currently using a Motorola EX124G, and wants to upgrade to the LGSunset. Any advice/comments would be most welcome!

I currently have the LG Power, whch aside from the 4g and LTE of the Sunset is the same phone. But I have a problem of not being able to make calls and having the phone for 3 weeks i was more engrossed with all the online and apps i could use. I upgraded from the 840g to this so you can understand it like a whole new world from a model T to full blown Tesla. Anyway I currently sent back the phone to Trac for a replacement, which i hope works. I wish i did more research b4 i bought it because i think im a victim of the GSM Vs.CDMA situation. But im in the greater Log Angeles Area so i should be covered regardless. Worse comes to worse ill buy the LS Sunset which should work in my area. Oh and i was able to switch all my minutes from the 840G to the lG power.

CupNoodle said...

Thanks D!

Anonymous said...

I'm planning to upgrade from an 840G to an LG Power or Sunset, but when I called Tracfone prior to my purchase, I was told that I wouldn't be able to switch my minutes from a non-smart phone to a smart phone. Thus, I'd lose my present 7K minutes on the 840G. Because I've been given incorrect info from Tracfone staff in the past, I'm confused to read you were able to switch your minutes. Whom do I call at Tracfone to get reliable info? Help!
Thanks.

Recently bought my Sunset at Wal-Mart. I have a Note 2 also. Although the screen resolution specs are inferior to the Note 2, somehow LG has made it difficult to tell the difference. My Sunset actually has better battery life and is more visible in direct sunlight. I operate my screen on about 60 percent brightness inside and it doesn't look underlie at all. The LG also has the ability to effectively use a stylus (my stylus is on the way). I paid $399 for my N2 a couple of years ago 38th a 2 year Verizon contract, and while the Note is obviously a better phone, the Sunset will be more than adequate for most users. Do plan on adding a SIM card though. I took my 8g SIM out of my N2 and put it in my Sunset 38th no issues.

CupNoodle said...

We did the upgrade, but needed to use the "live chat" feature on the TracFone Facebook page to get the data and messages credited, FYI. All is working perfectly! Thanks to this forum for the advice / opinions!

GooglVoice said...

Does that mean you can use either of those phones at anytime on tracfone just by switching the sim card back and fortth, or do you still have to talk with a CSR each time you switch?

Anonymous said...

Did you mean 8g SD card? New tracfones usually have to have a new sim because the sim is married/locked to that phone and not will not work in any other phone.

They transferred my minutes/texts/data (they offered to transfer my numbers, after I already notified everybody and I did not take them up on the offer) They did this after I sent them and the FCC an email about NO service in Western Maryland. (I loved this last part - FCC) I could not even dial 911...

Good news, Got the replacement LG Power, and it works fine now. I followed the note with phone to enter hash tag + 5 digit code to program my phone and i received the reply text that all was successful, and all the google apps were backed up so after i entered google account + password it was all systems go. If i upgrade to 4G tracfone ill wait til prices drop on the Sunset or a newer mode comes out. I paid $80 for the power on amazon btw. i have bought 2 cases + Mybat screen protector glass(Highly recommend) , and 32gig micro card so im all good for the foreseeable future. I really likee this phone!

Help, purchased LG Sunset and cannot use mobile data. Have checked all settings and does not work. Wi-fi in home works fine. Cannot use maps for gps. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check your APN settings. Also a dumb question- did you turn on the data? APN settings are a little tricky> Tracfone really isn't helpful when it comes to them. Found the correct settings on a ATT site:
Name RESELLER
APN: reseller
Proxy:Not set
Port: Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default,mms,supl,
APN protocol IPv4
APN roaming IPv4

Is the Sunset available everywhere even if it is not listed for my zip code(71109)? I have the dynamic 2 which I think uses Verizon towers and we have AT&T too.

Anonymous said...

I contacted Tracfone and added an APN using info given to me. It worked fine for picture messaging until I tried to receive a picture yesterday. The only difference from the settings you show above is that the APN name given is PRODATA. Should I change name to Reseller, or add a new APN ? So frustrating...Also, Should the wifi be on as well as data ?

snjguy said...

I had the same problem until I turned on the data and then I'd received the picture message. Wifi would only be for your home if you have it or in a place where they have wifi. Turning on the data did the trick. But I don't leave the data on if you have other apps.running. They will try to connect to the web and eat up your data. Try to send yourself a picture with the data on.

snjguy said...

I was using a LG840g that used AT&T so I knew I'd be using the same. Bought mine at shopcelldeals on ebay. You can check if you have coverage on HSN.com and look up LG Sunset. It has a verify coverage link.

I see that prior generations of this phone (LG ultimate Android, for example) say they are "3G/Wi-Fi Capable" -- but this phone is advertised only as 4G LTE, no mention of wifi. Can you still access home & outside wifi networks on this phone without using minutes?

snjguy said...

It's WiFi and 4G LTE. At home turn off the data and turn on the WiFi so you don't eat up your data.

I upgraded to an LG Sunset, I like it. I had an LG Ultimate 2 but wound up not having coverage in my area where my old flip phone had 5 bars and great signal all the time. Got the GSM Sunset, the coverage is spotty. Some areas I have great signal, but when I go to make a call I get Emergency Only, or no service. My wife's flip phone, has 5 bars and great service. Tracfone says it is the Android type phone, and they cannot make it connect to the AT&T tower that the Flip Phone connects to. I thought the newer technology would be better.

Hello! I wanted to give some feedback about the LG Sunset. I had moved my 32 GB SD card from my old phone to my new phone and it wouldn't acknowledge the card at all. I had to wipe the card and transfer the music over via cable (which took a VERY long time). Some of the tracks won't work & not sure why. I have almost 6,000 tracks (25 GB). I'll update if I fix it.

Hi! I had a problem around New Years' Day where my LG Sunset turned off, then got stuck in a boot loop. I tried the hard reset and that would not work either. I have since contacted Customer Support, and the phone has been shipped back to Straight Talk and I am waiting for them to send me a replacement phone (free of charge). I have to say that other than this episode, I've enjoyed the phone. Likewise, I have found Customer Support to be quite helpful. My only concern is the reason WHY the phone stopped working. I didn't have many apps on the phone, and didn't use the phone often for web browsing. Hope that whatever it was isn't contagious.

However they cannot hear me. I have tried pairing/ unpairing and resetting the car bluetooth to factory settings. Very disappointed as 4g LTE is lightning faster than my previous 3G phone

Anonymous said...

You did not mention what kind of "old phone" you had. Typically, you must unmount the SD card properly. If you simply power down the phone, pull off the back and remove the SD card, you have not unmounted it properly. On the LG Sunset, go to SETTINGS -> STORAGE -> UNMOUNT SD CARD. After you've unmounted it, power down the phone, pull off the back of the phone and remove the card. It will now have all the info you need to place it into another phone, and you'll have your music, pictures, videos.. whatever you've been storing on the card.. available. If you've moved apps to the SD card, not sure if they'll work in a new phone (probably need to be re-installed).

Just bought an LG L33L from HSN - thanks for the heads up on the deal this month! My question - how do I turn off data? I don't want to use up my data quickly (of course), and would like to turn off data so that apps, etc. don't eat into it. Is this the option in settings called mobile data? And if that is turned off - can I still get phone calls and use text? Thanks!!

Unknown said...

How does the group text work? I have the LG Ultimate and I cannot see the other people in a group text and I can only reply to the initial sender, not to the whole group. Is this the same for the Sunset? My older LG phones showed all the people in a group text and I could reply to all. Thanks!

I mostly love my LG33 exept for the crazy spelling corrections it does. I can not write the word "with". It's always changed to "28th".Some of the other things it does:
- Randomly capitalizes words mid-sentence
- Randomly adds numbers, then "th" at the end of words
- Sometimes auto-corrects perfectly ok words to a different word for no apparent reason
- If I write "s/b" it'll change it to "a/n"
- Red changed to 93rd
- 12 - " - 2012
- -8 - " - 809
- 5-1 - " - 5-12th
I can go on and on. It seems to really have a thing for numbers and adding "th" at the end.
My settings are:
Settings>Language&Input>LG Keyboard (press the wheel)>Smart Input:
Path input ☑
Show word sugg. ☑
Auto-correction: Moderate
Additional sett.>Input Tools:
Auto-Cap ☑
Spell checker ☑
Suggest next word ☑

Under Personal dictionary I added the word "with" to no avail.

I bought the phone from HSN about 9 months ago.

I just wrote a long note about the crazy spelling corrections my LG33 makes. Then got message "An error occurred while contacting the server". Does that mean it's gone?

Settings>Mobile data
Press to turn off, then answer "Yes" to Disable mobile data?

I noticed that twice when you wrote "with" it was changed to "38th". Does your phone make any other crazy auto-corrections? Mine does alot.

I have the L33L 10a TracFone purchased through HSN March 2016. I thought I was "upgrading" from the LGL41C, but I liked using the LGL41C much better. I usually only have one or two bars for service. It is with ATT&T, but got much better service with previous TracFone with Verizon. The phone has been getting very, very hot just sitting in my purse. Also the battery tends to run out in less than 5 hours after being fully charged and not even being used. Any advice on what I should do to address this issue?

No Tracfone works outside of the United States.

Pull down the top of the screen to show the menu. Click the data icon to turn it off or on. Same goes for Wi-Fi or any other setting. Love how dead simple this phone and Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is with Tracfone.

Or grab the top of the screen, drag down the menu, and change settings from there.

I can't access the Google Play Store on my LG Sunset, so I can't update any existing apps (Facebook, and Outlook, especially), or get any new ones. Do I have to reboot the phone, or is there an easier fix? Thanks.

MY LG L33L from Tracfone has no way to reject incoming calls- what gives or is there a way- there is no option I can find within the settings buttons

My LG sunset started to reboot on it's own, until I figured out that the phone was twisting in my pants pocket when bending or sitting, making the battery disconnect and reboot. So here's the fix! I used a piece of velcro, the soft side, and attached it to the back of the battery. Put the phone back on and now the back of the phone hold the battery snug against the contacts. Poor back design with to much room in the battery compartment. No more reboots.

Menifee. Yes, my LG33L phone does the same, always wants to insert 28th instead of with.

Hi,
Need to buy an SD card for my LG L33L (Sunset). It's out of memory. Can't update my apps or take a picture right now. Which Brand works best with LG? And can I go as high as 32 gig? Many thanks!
