Best Deal on Prepaid Minutes - Tracfone Airtime Guide

Airtime Comparison - Which Tracfone Card Should you Buy?

Welcome to TracfoneReviewer, a blog about all things Tracfone related!

best deal on tracfone minutes
Best deal on Tracfone Minutes
Is it cheaper to buy the 60 minute card every three months or the 1 Year Card? What is the cheapest way to buy service days? We hear these questions, and more, quite often, and wanted to share the answers to these questions, as well as others, with our readers.

Find out the cheapest way to get  talk, text or data, and we will also share details on which airtime cards offer the best value..

With Tracfone airtime cards, there isn't a 'best' card for everyone, because it all depends on how much airtime you use, and if you use your talk, text or data more.

So we have included several common scenarios, with the best airtime card for that situation.

Cheapest Way to Add Service Days:
Tracfone recently stopped offering their 365 service day card for $50 which is not good for users who just need additional service days. There are still some options for getting additional service days at a low cost.

The cheapest way to get more service days is to get the 60 minute regular airtime card for $20. It comes with 90 service days, making it about $80 for a year's worth of service days. Another good option is the 1 year/ 400 minute card that retails for $100 (but there are often $15 off promo codes available).

Cheapest Way to Add Only Talk Minutes
Tracfone just launched a new Talk-only add-on card that gives users additional talk time and nothing else. The card is $10 for 500 talk minutes which works out to be 2 cents per minute. Learn more with our Guide to the Talk Add-on Card.

Cheapest Way to Add only Texts:
The cheapest way to add texts to your phone is to buy the 1000 text card for $5. That works out to just half a penny per text.

This card is only available for smartphones. Learn more in our Guide to the Text Only Card from Tracfone and remember that there are promo codes for this card as well!

Cheapest Way to Add only Data:
The cheapest way to add data to your smartphone is to buy the 1000 MB (1 GB) card for $10. This card, like the other add-on cards gives you just data with no additional service days. It comes out to 1 cent per mb of data. Get more details and tips on using data in our guide.

Best Deal for Texts and Data (and some talk minutes):
The best deal for adding both texts and data is to add the $15 smartphone card which gives you 500 texts, 500 MB data, 30 service days and 500 talk minutes. The value of all of this airtime is $1750 not including the 30 service days, which is a fantastic deal. If you don't need service days or talk minutes, just add the text, talk, or data only cards. If you want more talk time, consider the 750 minute $35 card which also gives 1000 texts and 1000 MB.

Best Tracfone Airtime Card
The best airtime card to buy is the one that fits with the amount of minutes you use. Some cards are a better value than others, but if you're not using the airtime anyway, it doesn't really matter. Of course, airtime never expires, as long as you still have service days.

The 500 Minute ($25), 750 Minute ($35) and 750 Minute ($50) smartphone only cards are all less than $20 a month, and give the best value on talk, text and data minutes.

Tracfone also just started offering unlimited airtime cards which include unlimited talk and text, and fixed amounts of data and 30 service days. The cards are priced from $20-$30 and are great for heavy talk/text users. Get all the information on these new unlimited cards in our guide.

Conclusion:
With Tracfone, you get to monitor what you use, and purchase the airtime you need. Airtime usage may change from month to month, allowing users to purchase a different airtime card depending on the need.

If you prefer not to worry about purchasing more airtime every few months, Tracfone's auto refill might be a good option. We have already created a Guide to Tracfone auto refill which includes a look at the best value.

Tracfone Airtime Comparison - Smartphone Cards, Regular Cards and Unlimited Cards

Tracfone has been making some changes to their airtime card offering and adding some new options. Here is a breakdown of all the current airtime card options available to Tracfone users.

tracfone airtime cards breakdown
List of Tracfone Airtime Cards - Regular, Smartphone-Only and Unlimited Airtime Cards
Tracfone now offers three types of airtime cards (not including their add-on cards). Any of these cards can be added to a smartphone, but a non-smartphone can only use the regular airtime cards.

Looking at which options are the best value, the smartphone cards generally offer more talk, text and data compared to the regular airtime cards. The $15 smartphone card is a great deal if you need more of everything, with the value of all that airtime at $17.50 (not including the 30 additional service days!).

Finding the best airtime card is all about managing and tracking your airtime usage. And if you are running low, choose the card that makes the most sense depending on what you need. We will sharing a cost breakdown of each card soon.

New Unlimited Smartphone Plans Available from Tracfone!

Tracfone Adds Unlimited Talk/Text Plans for Smartphones

TracfoneReviewer shares the latest news, reviews and promo codes for Tracfone!

tracfone unlimited minutes
Tracfone Unlimited Airtime Plans
Tracfone quietly just released three new smartphone-only airtime card options with unlimited talk and text. Below are the details and we will share how the work and if it is a good deal.

Many users have suspected Tracfone would eventually offer an unlimited option with the cost of talk and text dwindling and that day has arrived.

Over the last few years Tracfone has stopped offering Triple Minutes for Life and introduced smartphone-only airtime cards with varying amounts of talk/text/data. The smartphone-only cards are generally a better deal for those who use all three 'buckets' and Tracfone also added Text only, Talk only and Data only airtime cards as add-ons.

Now we see three smartphone-only cards available on the Tracfone website and the Tracfone My Account App for purchase that come with unlimited talk and text, 30 days of service, and between 1 and 3 GB data depending on which card you get.

Let's jump straight into how they will work:

How the New Tracfone Unlimited Plans Work

The new unlimited plans are for smartphones only and feature unlimited talk and text while also providing 30 service days. They vary on price depending how much data you want with 1, 2 and 3 GB available.
  • $20 plan gets 1 GB
  • $25 plan gets 2 GB
  • $30 plan gets 3 GB
The cards should work in the same way other airtime cards work - they come with unlimited carryover (for the data) so if you get the 3 GB and only use 1 GB in a month, you should carry over the extra 2 GB to the next month (as long as you get additional service days or renew the monthly plan).

unlimited tracfone airtime card
Tracfone Smartphone Unlimited Plan Comparison

Tracfone has confirmed in their FAQ that customers won't lose any existing talk/text when they get the unlimited plan, all balances will carry over. For example, if you have 90 service days and 200 talk minutes and purchase one of the unlimited plans, you will get 30 additional service days added to your account, and if you don't renew the unlimited plan after 30 days, you will still have the 200 talk minutes.

Auto-refill is not currently offered, so users will have to add a new unlimited card each month to continue.

Are the Unlimited Plans a Good Deal?

Let's break down the cost and see how the value of these new airtime options from Tracfone work.

It is hard to judge exactly how much 'unlimited' calling and texting are worth since it depends on how much one typically uses, but many users can go through a few hundred calling minutes each month and avid texters could use several thousand texts.

Let's look at a possible example: If you were to use about 250 talk, 1000 texts and 1 GB data in a month, that would cost individually $20 ($5 for 250 talk, $5 for 1000 texts, $10 for 1 GB data). But that doesn't include the cost of service days, which is around $5 for 30 days.

The $20 smartphone card comes with 300 talk, 1000 text, 1 GB data and 30 service days, so it is already a good deal for heavy users.

Now with the unlimited smartphone plan at $20 for the same benefits but no cap on talk and text, it is a better deal for heavy users. However, one point to note, there is no carryover for talk and text with the unlimited plan so it is really only best for those who use upwards of 300 talk and 1000 text per month.

The $30 unlimited smartphone plan is an even better deal IF you use 1-3 GB data per month. The data alone is worth the $30 so you basically get free talk, text and service. If you don't use all your data, it rolls over to the next month.

Overall these new unlimited smartphone plans are a great deal but only for Tracfone users who go through a lot of talk, text and data each month. For some users it will make more sense to continue with the other airtime card options.

If you don't use a lot of minutes, a card like the $49 365 day airtime card (with 1200 talk/text and 3GB data) is a great option right now.

We don't expect Tracfone to change the other airtime card offerings at this time.

That concludes this post on the new unlimited plans but be sure to leave a comment below if you have any thoughts or questions!

How to Add Talk Minutes to your Tracfone - Talk Add-On Card

Tracfone Offers Talk Add on Card - Is it a Good Deal?

Analysis of the new talk add-on card by TracfoneReviewer.

add talk minutes tracfone
Tracfone talk add-on card
Ever wish you could add just extra talk minutes to your phone? Well now you can with Tracfone introducing a talk add-on card!

The new card adds extra talk minutes but no additional text/data or service days. With Tracfone smartphones, airtime is split into talk, text and data buckets and consumers have long asked for a talk add-on card to add just additional talk minutes.

Tracfone already offers both a Text Only Card and the Data Only Card and you can follow the links to see more details and a cost breakdown.

How Many Talk Minutes do you get from the Add-on Card?

Here is where things get a little interesting. With the Text and Data add-on cards, they are only available for smartphones. But Tracfone offers a talk add-on card for both basic phones and smartphones. However, the basic phone talk add on is just 100 minutes while the smartphone add-on is 500 talk minutes.

Basic Phones - 100 Additional Minutes - $10
Smartphones - 500 Additional Talk Minutes - $10

We haven't tested if the basic phone card will triple, but it seems likely that it will, so that would be 300 talk minutes for $10 which is still not as much as the smartphone add-on amount.

Is the Talk Add-on Card a Good Deal?

Let's look at the cost breakdown of the smartphone talk add-on:
  • Smartphone talk add-on is 2 Cents per Minute. (500 Min/$10)
At 2 Cents per minute the talk add-on card lines up with the other add-on cards and is a pretty good value. It also makes it easy to breakdown the cost of the other smartphone cards which we have done below:

tracfone add-on minutes
Tracfone Smartphone Card Cost Breakdown

What the table above shows is that certain smartphone cards are a better 'value' than others, specifically the $20 smartphone card. We also see that certain cards are not as good of a value, such as the $45 smartphone card and $125 smartphone card. However, it all really depends on how much talk, text and data you use.

To determine which cards are the best value, we broke up the value of talk, text, data and service days from each of the cards based on the cost of the add-on cards ($10 for 500 talk, $10 for 1000 MB data, $5 for 1000 texts and $5 for 30 service days) and then added the those numbers together to get the 'actual value' of the cards.

Note: Tracfone seems to have removed their service day add-on card which gave 365 service days for $50. We're not sure if they have removed this for good, or if they will be releasing it again, with perhaps an adjusted price.

With the $20 smartphone card, you are essentially getting $26 worth of airtime for $20.

Overall we consider the talk add-on toe be a good deal, especially for those who just need additional calling minutes. We also hope to see Tracfone promo codes for it in the near future like we already have for the text and data cards which make those an even better deal.

Where to Buy the Talk Add-on Card

Currently the talk add-on card is only available on the Tracfone website in the add-on section. You will need to select if you are using a basic phone or smartphone, or enter your phone number before seeing the card selections.

How to Buy Only Texts for your Tracfone Smartphone

How Texting Works with Tracfone and How to Add More

buy texts for tracfone
How to Buy Texts for Tracfone
For many of us, texting is our biggest drain of minutes on our Tracfone smartphone. And up until now, the only way to add more texts was by getting a card for more calling and data as well.

With Tracfone smartphones, each text you send or receive deducts from your total amount of texts. When you buy prepaid airtime cards, they allow you to make calls, send texts and surf the web on data. Tracfone sells a variety of prepaid cards (for both regular devices and smartphones), and each card adds more texts, data and calling minutes at the same time in different amounts.

With airtime split for smartphones into Talk, Text and Data buckets,, you can run out of data or texts and have to buy more calling minutes to refill your data and texts, even if you don't want any more calling minutes.

But Tracfone now offers a prepaid card you can purchase to add 1000 extra texts for $5. It is also possible to buy extra Data for your Tracfone as well and you can follow the link to learn more.

It is very convenient to be able to just buy additional texts, especially as Tracfone offers more and more smartphones. And remember that these data and text specific cards only work with smartphones.

Let's break down how the text card works, and where to get it.

What is the Text Only Card and What do you Get?

There are three kinds of prepaid cards you can buy from Tracfone to use with your smartphone:

  • Regular Airtime Cards - available for all phones
  • Smartphone Only Airtime Cards - only available with smartphones
  • Add-on Cards - only available with smartphones

The regular airtime cards (with varying amounts from 60 minutes to 450 minutes) are generally not the best deal, especially for heavy data or text users as they don't give you as many texts/data for the price. However, some phones with triple minutes help make these cards a more reasonable deal.

buy text 1000 card
Text Refill Card available at Target
Smartphone Only cards have specific amounts of talk/text/data and generally give more text/data than talk time because most users tend to use more texts and data. The smartphone only cards range in price from $15 to $125.

Finally, Tracfone also offers add on cards which, unlike the other two kinds of cards, only add one type of airtime (either talk, text, data or service days).

Here are the current Tracfone Add On Cards:
  • Talk - 500 Talk Minutes for $10
  • Text - 1000 Texts for $5
  • Data - ! GB Data for $10
  • Service Days - 1 Year of Service for $50 (Currently unavailable, Tracfone may have removed this)
At first glance, 1000 texts for $5 looks like a good deal, but is it? Let's break it down.

Comparing the Cost Per Text for Airtime and Text Cards

Is it cheaper to buy an Airtime card or a Text card to refill your Texts?

If you buy the 60 Minute Airtime card, you will get 60 texts, which is tripled to 180 on some smartphones (you also get 180 calling minutes, and 180 mb of data, plus 90 days of service) for $20. This works out to just over 1.4 cents per text after factoring out the value of the talk, data and service days you also get.

If you get the $25 Smartphone Only Card you get 500 minutes, 1000 texts, 500 mb data and 60 service days. This works out to 0.6 cents per text, which is a little better than the 60 minute card.

And what does the 1000 texts for $5 come to per text? 0.5  cents per text, which is the best deal.

buy texts for tracfone
Tracfone Text Card 1000
As you can clearly see, if you only need text messages for your phone, the special text card is the best deal. But if you need additional calling, data or service days, some of the smartphone only cards are also a good deal.

We recently created a Full Comparison of Tracfone Airtime Cards which looks at which airtime card is the best deal, and includes information on text and data only cards.

So what should you do if you need just a few calling and data minutes, plus service days, but go through texts quickly? Try buying some of the lower cost airtime cards that include plenty of service days, like the 60 minute card which as 90 service days, and then buy additional text add on cards as needed.

Where to Buy the 1000 Texts Card

The 1000 Texts Card is available as an add-on from the Tracfone website. The cards can also be found in many retail stores including Target and Walmart, and also online from many sources such as Amazon.

Get Bonus Texts when adding the Text Only Card! Don't forget that there are often promo codes for extra texts (500 to 1000) when adding the 100 text card! Visit our Tracfone Promo Code page to see the codes!

How to Check Your Tracfone Airtime Balance

6 Ways to Check your Minutes Balance on Tracfone Smartphones

Below we share how you can check your airtime on Tracfone smartphones. If you're new to Tracfone, consider taking a look at our Beginners Guide to Tracfone (opens in new window).
tracfone airtime balance android
Check Tracfone Airtime Balance on a Smartphone
On older, non Android phones, airtime and service days are displayed on the home screen and via the prepaid menu for easy monitoring.

But on Android Smartphones, there is no automatic menu or display for your airtime. So how can you check your balance? We will answer that here, with several different ways!

Tracfone is a prepaid cell phone service provider that also sells phones to use with their service. They have a wide variety of phones, from flip phones to touchscreen smartphones. Visit the Latest List of Tracfone Smartphones to see recent options including some of the latest Android devices.

On Android smartphones, minutes are not treated the same as on feature phones, they are split into three buckets for texts/talk/data.

It is always important to keep track of your airtime and service days with Tracfone because if you run out of minutes or service days, you can't make any calls. Now with your texts, talk and data split into different buckets for Android phones, it is even more important to keep track of how many of each you have remaining. Take a look at our explanation of How Minutes Work on Android Phones for more information.

We've also Compared the New Smartphone-only cards to the Regular Airtime Cards to determine which card is the best deal.

Well, if you're having trouble checking your airtime on a Tracfone smartphone, we've got an easy solution for you, actually we have four different solutions!

How to Check your Tracfone Balance on a Smartphone

Because it is so important to manage your airtime with Tracfone, we've included several different ways to check your balance! Not all of these methods will work for everyone, but hopefully you can find a convenient way to check your balance.

1. Use the Tracfone My Account App

Tracfone provides an Android app to help manage your account and it is a helpful for tracking your airtime.

tracfone balance
Tracfone My Account App airtime balance
Once you download the The Tracfone App (follow the link to it on Google Play)  you can enter your details and keep up with your remaining minutes.

You can even add a widget to your home-screen that will display your airtime, much like on older feature phones!

Download the Tracfone My Account App:

Step 1 -  Go to the Google Play Store on your phone (through the Google Play Store App)  and search for 'Tracfone My Account'. (or follow the link) Select the app and choose 'Install'

Step 2 - Once the app is installed, launch it and enter your Tracfone account login details. If you don't already have a Tracfone account, simply go to the Tracfone website and create one.

Step 3 - Use the app to check your remaining balance. At this point you can also install a widget on your homescreen so you can always view your balance. To do this, tap and hold in an open space on your homescreen and then select widgets at the top of the screen. From the drop down of apps, select the Tracfone My Account widget.

If you don't have the space for this app on your phone, or want to check your balance online, you can use any of the following methods.

2. View Your Airtime on the Tracfone Website

You can always go to the Tracfone website, whether from your phone or on a computer, and log in and view your account details. From there you can check your airtime balance and it should show your remaining minutes, and/or send you a free text with this information.

Speaking of texts, you can now buy extra text messages for your phone. Read our analysis of the new Text Message card and more!

3. Use the Following URL to Check your Airtime Balance:

Some readers shared this easy trick for checking your airtime balance. It appears to sometimes redirect users to log into their Tracfone account, but it is a convenient method if it works.

You can enter the following URL to check your balance:
"https://www.tracfone.com/direct/CheckBalance?input_phone=1234567890" (replace 1234567890 with your phone number, and don't include the "" quotation marks). You should get a text with your balance.

And this next option for checking your airtime is maybe the fastest, but only works for GSM users.

4. Call *777*1# from your Smartphone to Check your Balance

Check Tracfone Balance
Check your Tracfone Balance from your Phone!
This is by far the fastest and easiest way to check your airtime on a Tracfone Smartphone or BYOP device. However, it only works for some devices (GSM). A number of readers have reported they are unable to use this, so if you try it and it doesn't work, use one of the other methods above.

All you do is call *777*1# and you should get a pop-up within a few seconds that shows your talk, text and data. If you get something else, or an error, then it doesn't work on your phone.

5. Text 'Balance' to 611611 for your Airtime Balance

This is a newer option for Tracfone users to get their airtime balance sent directly to your text message inbox. You get your talk, text and data totals, plus your service end date.

Standard messaging rates apply, so you will be deducted for the texts.

6. (NOTE - Some Users Reporting Inaccurate Results) Enter your Phone Number on this Page to See Your Airtime Balance:

Visit http://www.fastactportal.com/static/balance and enter your phone number to retrieve your balance.

Bonus Method for Checking your Airtime
This appears to work for both smartphones and non-smartphones, and will display your service days as well. You can bookmark that site on your phone or computer, and check it at your convenience.

Tracking your airtime is important, so that you don't run out at an inconvenient time when you really need the phone.

Tracfone has expanded their options for monthly and automatic renewal plans, and they can be a good fit for many. You can sign up on the Tracfone website, and cancel at any time.

The Future of Tracfone in 2019

New Phones, Predictions, and Changes for Tracfone in 2019!

Welcome to TracfoneReviewer with the latest news, reviews and more!

tracfone new phones 2019
The Future of Tracfone in 2019
See our new updated post for 2020 here!

Each year brings changes, new phones, and possibilities. And with 2019 here, we will be looking forward at what the new year might hold as far as changes to Tracfone in the future, and trends they may follow.

We will also share some insights on the previous year, 2018, and review some of the highlights.

Remember that TracfoneReviewer is not sponsored or affiliated with Tracfone in any way, we just try to share helpful news and information.

If you are curious about what we predicted and shared last year, check out our previous post for 2018.

Let's begin with a review of some of the highlights from 2018 including changes and new phones.

Looking Back on 2018

One of the major highlights we encountered was a flourish of new phones released late in 2018 which included the first budget phone with 32 GB storage.

We saw Tracfone release the latest version of devices from both LG and Samsung product lines which included phones like the LG Rebel 4 and Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown.  Tracfone also released some high-end devices like the iPhone 7 Plus.

But what was really exciting to see was the release of the Moto G6. It is a budget friendly phone that still packs a lot of features including 32 GB internal storage at a price of around $200.

One thing we didn't see Tracfone change was their move in 2017 to end Triple Minutes for Life. However, they did add a triple minute bonus to new phone activations so many users who bought new devices with airtime bundles reported getting their balance tripled.

Overall, Tracfone mostly maintained their course in 2018 with perhaps an increase in speed of releasing new phones.

Popular Phones form Tracfone in 2018
Based on our own data, these are the most popular phones from Tracfone in 2018. This is somewhat unofficial, but still interesting to share.
  1. Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown
  2. LG Rebel 4
  3. LG Premier Pro
  4. Moto G6
The J7 Crown follows in the footsteps of the previous version, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro, which was the most popular phone from 2017.

Now, let's look to the future in 2019.

What to Expect from Tracfone in 2019

New Phones from Tracfone
Below are several phones Tracfone is likely to release in 2019 and we will add more information as it becomes available.

New smartphones coming in 2019 include:
  • iPhone 8/ 8 Plus
  • iPhone XR/XMAX/XS/X
  • Moto G7
  • Various ZTE/LG/Samsung budget options
Tracfone has consistently increased the lineup for Apple devices and we expect to see some of the latest iPhones coming to Tracfone in the near future. However, these phones do come with a hefty price tag.

To see what is currently new from Tracfone, visit our Latest List of Tracfone Smartphones 2019.

What to Expect from Tracfone BYOP
The BYOP program continues as a great option for consumers who prefer the flexibility of choosing their own phone to use with Tracfone and we don't expect any significant changes in 2019. Tracfone will likely continue as they have in 2018 to streamline the process and hopefully continue to iron out any issues.

What to Expect from Airtime
Tracfone has fully implemented it's new smartphone only airtime cards which are generally a great deal for smartphone users. Customers can still buy the regular airtime cards, and we expect Tracfone to continue to make this possible while also focusing on promoting their smartphone only cards.

What to Expect from Tracfone Promo Codes
Initially when Tracfone started offering the new smartphone only cards it seemed that they might try to phase out promotional codes. But we fully expect Tracfone to continue to offer promotional codes for both regular airtime cards and smartphone only cards as they are widely popular with customers.

What we Want in 2019

Improve customer service - Tracfone has long be known for their poor customer service and with the addition of several brick and mortar stores, we had hoped they were making it a more significant focus. However, it doesn't appear that much as changed and many users still report running into difficulties and problems.

We hope that Tracfone will work at creating a more customer-centric approach to inspire confidence going forward. Long wait times on hold and poor training of customer service reps are two of the more noticeable problems.

More Phones like the Moto G6
We want to see more phones from Tracfone that offer 32 GB storage and other attractive features at under $200. While that is a demanding goal, we hope to see the next lineup of budget phones form LG and Samsung include the extra storage space many users need at an affordable price.

The unlocked version of the LG Stylo 4, for example, features 32 GB storage plus a number of other great features with a $200 price while the Tracfone version only has 16 GB storage at a similar price. Let's hope Tracfone can step up and provide consumers with more competitive options.

This concludes our thoughts on the future of Tracfone in 2019. Please share any thoughts or questions you have in the comments below!

Moto E5 Plus and E5 Play Budget Smartphones Coming Soon

Unlocked Moto E5 Plus and E5 Play Specs and Release Info

News, Specs and more on the Moto E5 from TracfoneReviewer

tracfone moto e5
Moto E5 Plus and Play Coming Soon
Motorola has announced several new budget smartphones - the Moto E5 Plus, E5 Play and E5. Although these will be low cost devices, they will pack some impressive features which we will share more about below.

They will likely be great options to bring to the Tracfone BYOP program as they are unlocked and compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks.

Motorola also recently announced the Moto G6, G6 Play and G6 Plus and you can follow the link to learn more. The Moto G lineup generally offers a little more performance at a higher cost compared to the Moto E line.

The Moto E5 Plus might be the most notable (and also the highest priced) with a large, 6" touchscreen, enormous 5,000 mAh battery, 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Storage. Motorola isn't expected to release the Moto E5 in the US market, so only the Plus and Play versions will be available.

The E5 Play will have a much smaller, 5.2" screen, smaller battery, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage but likely priced closer to $150 or less.

Both Moto E5 variants will have Android 8.0 Oreo, Octa-core processors and expandable storage with a Micro SD card slot.

The previous version, the Moto E4 Plus, had similar specs except a smaller, 5.5" screen, only a quad-core processor and a few other differences.

Both the E4 and E5 Plus are clearly aiming for customers who want a large screen, long battery life, but don't demand intense performance from the phone (but it can still handle most apps and games).

Below is a full list o the features and specs for the Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 Play

Moto E5 Plus Features and Specs

Network: GSM or CDMA Compatible, Unlocked
OS: Android 8.0 Oreo
Screen: 6.0" HD Touchscreen at 1440x720 Resolution (268 dpi, 18:9 ratio)
Processor: 1.4Ghz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor
RAM: 3 GB
Storage: 32 GB
Camera: 12 MP Rear, 8 MP Front with 1080 HD Video
Battery: 5,000 mAh battery
Size: 6.33 x 2.96 x 0.37 in (6.95oz)

Additional Features:
Micro SD Card slot with up to 128 GB additional storage
Headphone Jack
Micro USB connection
Fingerprint Reader (on back)
Expected Release: Late May/Early June 2018
Expected Price: ~$200

And now let's look at the smaller, Moto E5 Play:

Moto E5 Play Features and Specs

Network: GSM or CDMA Compatible, Unlocked
OS: Android 8.0 Oreo
Screen: 5.2" HD touchscreen (1280x720 resolution)
Processor: 1.4 Ghz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor
RAM: 2 GB
Storage: 16 GB
Camera: 8MP rear, 5 MP front with 1080 HD video
Battery: 2800 mAh (removable)
Size: 5.94 x 2.91 x 0.35 in (5.29oz)

Additional Features:
Micro SD Card slot with up to 128 GB additional storage
Headphone Jack
Micro USB connection
Fingerprint Reader (on back)
Expected Release: Late May/Early June 2018
Expected Price: ~$100-150

There are several similarities between these models, such as the Operating System, fingerprint reader and other base features, but they also have some significant differences, with the most obvious the screen size and battery.

The Moto E5 Play has a 5.2" screen which is the same size as the Moto G5 Plus, but significantly smaller than the E5 Play. Not everyone prefers a larger phone, so this is a good option for users who prefer something that fits in one hand more easily, or in a smaller pocket. With the smaller screen, and overall smaller size, the E5 Play also has a battery almost half the size of the E5 Plus. But don't worry, that still puts it right inline with most phones of this size, and users should get all day battery life.

Also important to notice is the internal storage and RAM for each of the models, with the E5 Plus featuring 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Storage, while the E5 Play only has 2 GB RAM and 16 GB Storage. Tracfone offers a number of smartphones with 16 GB storage/2 GB RAM for under $100 including the LG Premier Pro and LG Rebel 3, so these might be worth considering, although the E5 Play does have a newer OS and better processor compared to the LG phones we mentioned.

The differences continue with the camera and processors, although these aren't as significant differences. The E5 Plus does have a slightly faster processor, and better rear camera.

And, as expected, the prices will also likely be quite different, with the E5 Play likely around $100-150 and the E5 Plus somewhere around the $200 price range.

We will continue to update this as more details become available. Share your thoughts or questions in the comment section below.

Motorola G6 (Unlocked) - Features and Specs

New Motorola G6 Features, Specs and Where to Buy

Motorola G6 tracfone
Motorola G6 Coming Soon!
The next Generation in the Motorola Moto G line is here now and may also be coming to Tracfone in the near future.

UPDATE: The Moto G6 is now available directly from Tracfone. Visit our Tracfone Moto G6 Review to learn more and find out where to buy with airtime bundle.

Motorola announced the Moto G6 (and several variants) on April 19th, 2018. It is the newest phone in the Moto G lineup which is well known for offering great smartphone features at an affordable price.

The G6 has a 5.7" full HD touchscreen, 1.8 Ghz Octa-core processor, Dual rear camera, and runs Android 8.0 Oreo. It also comes with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage.

The Moto G6 is available to purchase:

View the Moto G6 (unlocked) on BestBuy

View the Moto G6 Play (unlocked only for GSM) on Amazon

View the Moto G6 Plus (international unlocked version only for GSM) on Amazon

Many of the past Moto G versions, such as the Moto G4 and Moto G5, have been very popular with the Tracfone BYOP program because they offer great features at a reasonable price. It is rumored that the Moto G6 will also be released directly from Tracfone, which would also be a great option for Tracfone customers. We will share additional information on this as we learn more.

Let's see the list of features and specs on the Moto G6

Motorola G6 Features and Specs

  • Dual Rear Camera - 13 MP and 5 MP
  • 1.8 Ghz Octa-Core Processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 450)
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 32 GB Internal Storage
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • 5.7" 1080x2160px Touchscreen
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • Unlocked and compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks
  • Price: $250
One of the most notable specs is the large, 18:9 ratio full HD touchscreen. The previous generation, the Moto G5, had only a 5.2" screen, but the new Moto G6 bumps that up to 5.7".

The dual rear camera is another feature usually seen in much more expensive devices and allows for selective focus in portrait mode for a blurry background.

The Moto G6 is fully compatible with both GSM and CDMA carriers which is great for the Tracfone BYOP program.

Motorola is also releasing two variants, the Moto G6 Play and Moto G6 Plus. The G6 Play will have the same size screen, slightly downgraded internal specs, a larger battery, and retail for $199.

Moto G6 Play Features and Specs
  • Rear Camera - 13 MP
  • 1.4 Ghz Quad-Core Processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 or 430)
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 32 GB Internal Storage
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • 5.7" 720x1440 HD Touchscreen
  • Corning Gorilla Glass
  • 4000 mAh battery
  • Unlocked and compatible with only GSM networks
  • Price: $200
The G6 Play comes with many of the same features in the G6, such as 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, and Android Oreo. The Play also has a 5.7" screen, but at a lower resolution. The processor in the Play is also not as powerful, but the phone does have a larger battery compared to the G6.

For those that don't need the higher performance from the G6, the Play variant will offer almost all of the same features at a lower price. Unfortunately the Moto G6 Play appears to be only compatible with GSM networks.

The Moto G6 Plus is not expected to be released in the North American market, and only released internationally. But it is still possible to purchase the international version and use it with any GSM carrier through Tracfone.

Moto G6 Plus (international version) Features and Specs
  • Dual Rear Camera - 12 MP and 5 MP
  • 2.2 Ghz Octa-Core Processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 630)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 64 GB Internal Storage
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • 5.9" 1080x2160px Touchscreen
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 3200 mAh battery (non-removable)
  • Unlocked and compatible with GSM networks
  • Price: $350-400
If you are looking for high performance and don't mind spending a little more, the Moto G6 Plus has more RAM, storage and a faster processor than the G6.

Only the international version of the G6 Plus is available, and it is only compatible with GSM carriers.

We will continue to update this as we gather more details, especially any news about Tracfone releasing their own Moto G6 version. If Tracfone does release the G6, it would certainly jump into our List of the Best Tracfone Smartphones.

The Future of Tracfone in 2018

New Phones, Changes, and Predictions for Tracfone in 2018

Welcome to TracfoneReviewer. We share news, reviews and other information about Tracfone!

tracfone new phones 2018
The Future of Tracfone in 2018
A New Year is upon us and whether last year was a good year, a bad year, or just another year, it is coming to a close with the opportunity for next year to be something new.

With 2018 here, we are sharing our expectations and predictions for what Tracfone will do in the near year, what we hope Tracfone will do, and also a look back at what went on in 2017 and the major changes and new phones.

Each year we share our predictions and expectations, and you can look back at our post from last year to see how we did.

Remember that this site (TracfoneReviewer) is not affiliated with Tracfone in any way. But we are passionate about learning and sharing information, and while our predictions are based on years of experience, they may not always be accurate and so we cannot guarantee any of our predictions.

Let's begin with some of the highlights of 2017.

Looking back at 2017 - Major News and Changes

Tracfone made some significant changes in 2017, and also released several popular phones. Here are the highlights.

  • Tracfone Ends Triple Minutes for Life - This was probably the biggest news story from Tracfone from 2017.
  • Expended iPhone options including the iPhone 5S, 6 ad 6S and iPhone SE
  • Tracfone releases several smartphones with large screens and 16 GB memory/2 GB RAM at under $200 (LG Fiesta 2/Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro)
  • Tracfone Expands Brick and Mortar Stores

Although Tracfone released some great phones, they did not help their customer satisfaction level by ending the popular Tripe Minutes for Life program.

Most Popular Phones in 2017
We looked at which of our Tracfone cell phone reviews had the most hits, and created our list from there. This is somewhat unofficial, but we still found it interesting and wanted to share it.
  1. Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro
  2. LG Fiesta 2 (and LG Fiesta)
  3. Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro
The Samsung Galaxy Sky Pro was the most popular phone from last year which comes at no surprise, considering it offers some of the best features and specs of any budget Tracfone to date.

Now that we've looked back at last year, let's get into our predictions and expectations for Tracfone in 2018.

What to Expect From Tracfone in 2018

The Future Phones from Tracfone
We expect Tracfone to release several new phones in the next few months that will be modest upgrades to the current smartphones such as the LG Fiesta 2 and Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro.

In 2017 we saw Tracfone release several popular budget phones from major brands (LG and Samsung), and we predict they will offer updated versions of these phones, or similar offerings.

Tracfone will likely also continue to offer older high end phones at a discount, such as the iPhone SE that they offered in 2017. Could we see the iPhone 8 or other popular high end smartphones? Perhaps, but they will come at a high cost which is .

The Future of Tracfone BYOP
Tracfone's 'Bring Your Own Phone' program has grown in popularity as they ironed out issues and made most phones compatible. We will have noticed users running into issues activating certain phones, but with enough patience this can usually be overcome. In many cases it is even possible to simply swap the SIM card from one phone to another, effectively switching service to a new phone at any time with no other effort involved.

We expect Tracfone to maintain the BYOP program although they likely won't make any significant changes to it. Users can already bring almost any unlocked GSM or CDMA device to use with Tracfone.

The Future of Airtime
Tracfone will continue to encourage customers to use the smartphone cards instead of the regular airtime cards. For many users, the smartphone cards are a better deal because they offer more data and texts compared to regular cards. But for those who don't use their data or texts, it still doesn't make sense to use smartphone only cards.

A major change from 2017 was when Tracfone stopped including new phones with Triple Minutes for Life. The obvious aim with this is to encourage (force) users to buy the smartphone only cards instead of regular airtime cards (because without triple minutes, the regular airtime cards are not a very god deal).

We don't expect any major changes to Tracfone going forward into 2018 and see them working at streamlining their product offerings to make it more simple, and more attractive to potential customers.

What we Want from Tracfone in 2018

Here are some of the things we want Tracfone to do in 2018 (just in case someone from Tracfone reads this)

Add Triple Minutes for Life Back to New Phones.
While we understand why Tracfone ended triple minutes (to move users to the smartphone only cards) we think they should add triple minutes back to new phones because of the large number of unhappy customers. We noticed numerous comments stating dissatisfaction in Tracfone for changing this from loyal customers. While we hope Tracfone changes this, we don't expect they will.

Improve Customer Service and Fix Lingering Issues with BYOP Compatibility.
Small steps were taken by Tracfone in 2017 to improve customer service by opening several physical stores. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement and we hope they will make customer service more of a priority.

Tracfone also has some lingering issues with the BYOP program as a number of customers have run into issues trying to activate certain unlocked smartphones. Tracfone needs to fix this immediately.

Add More Budget Smartphones at Reasonable Prices
What we really want from Tracfone are more budget phones with good performance at under $200. Devices with 32 GB of memory and at least 2 GB RAM are generally necessary for an everyday device for most users. There are a number of unlocked devices in the sub $200 range that some consumers are already buying to use with the BYOP program (such as the Moto E4 Plus) but we want Tracfone to offer them directly for greater availability.

That concludes our Tracfone predictions, expectations and hopes for 2018!

Tracfone WiFi Calling - How it Works and More

How WiFi Calling Works with Tracfone and How to Make Free Calls

free calling wifi tracfone
Tracfone WiFi Calling
Is WiFi Calling Free? How does it work? We are here to help answer questions about WiFi Calling, and share an option for free calling using WiFi. If you're not sure how WiFi Calling works, if you have it or if you want it, this is the article to read.

Information about WiFi Calling with Tracfone is not completely clear, but we've tried to collect and share the most accurate details below. If you have anything to add, or if we made a mistake, let us know in the comments.

If you're new to TracfoneReviewer, take a look around. We offer lots of Tracfone related tips, news, info and reviews. A great place to start is our Beginners Guide to Tracfone.

Now, let's take a look at WiFi Calling with Tracfone.

What is WiFi Calling?

WiFi Calling is a feature that allows you to send and receive both calls and texts over a WiFi network instead of the cell network. The main benefit is that you can stay connected with calls/texts when cell service is not available but WiFi is, such as in the basement of a large building, or in a rural area.

WiFi Calling doesn't give you the ability to make free calls and texts. (Read further along to learn how to do this with Google Voice.) You are still charged the normal rate for calls and texts by Tracfone.

WiFi Calling works on both Android and iOS devices, although not all phones support it, and not all cell phone service providers support it.

Tracfone does support WiFi Calling, but only on some smartphones, and certain BYOP devices. It appears to depend on the phone and your location, as not all the networks Tracfone users support WiFi Calling.

To see if your phone is capable, take a look at the requirements for WiFi Calling:

Basic Requirements for WiFi Calling

There are a few basic requirements for WiFi Calling
  • SIM Card/Network that Supports it
  • Cell Phone with WiFi Calling Capability
  • e911 Registration
The first two requirements can be a little tricky to figure out. The easiest way is to just try and enable WiFi Calling to see if it will work. Tracfone uses several other cell phone networks, and a variety of different smartphones, so not all are capable or compatible.

You can visit https://e911-reg.tracfone.com/wps/portal/home/ and enter your phone number and last four digits of your SIM card number (located on your SIM card for BYOP devices).

Testing with an unlocked Moto G4 Plus with GSM SIM was unsuccessful.

How to Setup WiFi Calling

If you're phone is eligible, then follow these steps for WiFi Calling:
  1. Register an E911 address, which requires you to submit your home address, by visiting http://e911-reg.tracfone.com
  2. Enable WiFi Calling on your device (if it isn't already enabled) by going to Settings > More > WiFi Calling. Here is a Tracfone tutorial for enabling WiFi Calling.
  3. If you run into problems, try double checking each step and if that doesn't work, contact Tracfone directly or leave a comment below.
If you're phone is capable of WiFi Calling, it should be a fairly quick and easy process to enable it.

But what if you can't enable WiFi Calling, or you want to make free calls using WiFi? Well we've got the answer!

How to Make Free Calls using WiFi

If you were expecting WiFi Calling to make it possible to make free calls and texts, you are probably disappointed. But don't worry, there are other options for free calling and texting, and we will share one of the more popular methods here.

Using Google Hangouts/Hangouts Dialer and a free phone number from Google Voice, you can make free calls from WiFi. Anyone you call will see your Google Voice number, not your Tracfone number, but you can port your Tracfone number to Google Voice if you prefer that.

Steps to Make Free Calls with Google Hangouts Dialer:
  1. Visit Google Voice and sign up for a free phone number. You are able to choose a phone number from a large variety available from many different area codes.
  2. Download Google Hangouts Dialer app on your smartphone
  3. Connect your Account and Verify your Phone Number
  4. Make a Test Call using the Google Hangouts Dialer app to check that everything is working.
Now you should be able to send and receive phone calls to your Tracfone smartphone using your Google Voice phone number and the Dialer app.

Here is a helpful YouTube video that also explains more about Google Hangouts Dialer and how it works.

If you are looking for free texting, there are a number of texting apps such as Whatsapp, Line App, and more, that allow free texting with anyone else who also has the app.

Using a Google Voice number and the Hangouts Dialer app is a great way for anyone to make calls using WiFi without using any Tracfone airtime.

We hope this information is helpful and leave a comment with any thoughts or questions.

The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro has a large, 5.5" touchscreen, quad-core processor, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory. It also comes with Android 6.0.1 and an 8 MP camera.

One of a handful of popular phones released by Tracfone in 2017, the Galaxy Sky Pro is one of only a few phones that comes with 2 GB RAM.

View the Samsung Galaxy Sky Pro on Amazon ($149 currently $99)

Tracfone has continued to release new phones with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB memory, with the LG Fiesta 2 and LG Rebel 3 some of the more recent options.

Many Tracfone users have been looking for a phone from Tracfone that can offer performance at an affordable price, will the Galaxy J7 meet that need? Let's take a closer look to learn more.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro (S727VL) Features and Specs

  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS
  • Voicemail, Caller ID, MMS/SMS

Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro Technical Specs

  • 1.4 Ghz Quad-core processor
  • 3300 mAh Battery (31 hours talk time, 22 days standby)
The Galaxy J7 brings improvements in several areas over its predecessors, the Galaxy Sky and Galaxy Luna, most notably increased RAM, screen size and processor. It has a few similarities to the Galaxy Luna Pro, such as Processor, RAM, and internal memory.

We will share more comparison details further down, but first let's look at a breakdown review of each of the main components on the J7.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro Review

Screen
At 5.5", the screen on the Samsung Galaxy J7 is large enough to make watching videos and texting easy, but not so big it won't fit in a pocket. It is a very popular size for many smartphones these days, with a several other phones, such as the LG Fiesta 2, also featuring a 5.5" screen.

It has an HD screen with resolution of 720x1280 (266 dpi), and most users find it vibrant and easy to see. There are options to make it brighter for outdoor use, and to dim it when using it at night. Overall it is one of the better screens for a phone in this price range from Tracfone.

Internal Specs
The Galaxy Sky Pro comes with 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory and a quad-core 1.4 Ghz processor (Snapdragon 425) that pair well together to allow multitasking and good responsiveness. The operating system and pre-installed apps take up about 8 GB, leaving 8 GB free for adding apps, pictures, music and videos. There is also a Micro SD Card slot for additional storage.

Although many would prefer this phone with extra storage space, such as 32 GB , it is quite capable of everyday use and loading a good number of apps on it before running out of space.

Check out our list of the Best Apps for Android for some ideas.

Camera
The camera performs well for both video and photos, and is capable of 1080p HD videos and 8 MP images. The front selfie camera shoots 5 MP pictures and has a 'wide angle' mode to allow more people to fit into one shot.

Battery
Battery life for the J7 Sky Pro is very reasonable, with 3300 mAh that should easily last the day for most users. It does have a battery saving mode to help reduce power usage when running low. Screen brightness and processor speed are usually the largest power consumers on a device, so if you find yourself running out the battery quickly, consider reducing these, or invest in an external battery pack.

tracfone samsung galaxy j7 s727vl
Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro for Tracfone
Android OS
The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro uses Android 6.0.1 which was first released at the end of 2015, and comes with a number of improvements, enhancements and appearance changes over previews versions. One issue with Tracfone smartphones is that you cannot update the OS. So whatever the version the phone comes with, it will not update to any newer versions. For most people, this isn't a problem, but if you like using the latest and greatest Android OS, consider looking into an unlocked phone like the Moto G5 Plus, and bringing it to Tracfone BYOP.

The combination of features and specs on the Galaxy J7 are impressive, especially at the price it can be found for online, and it is no wonder it has been a popular choice for many users.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro Compared to other Tracfone Smartphones

How does the Galaxy J7 compare to some of the other recently released smartphones? Let's take a look.

The Galaxy Luna has a 4.5" screen, while the Galaxy Sky comes with a 5" screen. Both of these devices have been popular choices for their good performance, and reasonable price, and both the Galaxy Luna Pro (5" screen) and Galaxy Sky Pro (5.5" screen) step it up another level with the increased RAM, Storage and screen size.

The main difference between the Galaxy J3 Luna Pro and Galaxy J7 Sky Pro are the screen size, and improved RAM on the J7.

The Galaxy J7 runs Android 6.0.1 which is a fairly recent version of the OS, but the LG Fiesta 2  and LG Rebel 3 already come with Android 7.0. The Fiesta also has a 5.5" screen, and 16 GB storage/2 GB RAM. The LG Rebel 3 has a smaller 5" screen, and the same RAM/Storage.

With the great performance of the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro, we have added it to our List of the Top 5 Tracfone Cell Phones.

Verizon will also be getting their own version of the Samsung Galaxy J7, which may have different specs than the Tracfone version. And it may be possible to bring it to the Tracfone BYOP program at a cheaper cost.

Where to Buy the Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro

The Samsung Galaxy Sky Pro is currently available from Amazon and QVC.com for $99 with airtime bundle (1500 talk, text, data and 1 year service) which is a great deal. The airtime is worth about $125, making the phone free! We expect the price to go up slightly in the near future.

Find it on Amazon with an airtime card for $99

Overall the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is very similar to the Galaxy Sky and Galaxy Luna, but with a larger screen and improved processor and RAM to keep up. If you are looking for a phone with a large screen the Galaxy Sky Pro might be a great option.

The Moto G line of smartphones is a popular choice for Tracfone users. They are versatile, budget friendly devices that pack in great performance too. We recently shared our review of the Moto G4, a great option to use with BYOP because of the capability to activate it as either a GSM or CDMA device, among other strengths.

Now we have news about the upcoming Moto G5 and G5 Plus. So if you're curious about the next generation of Moto G phones, keep reading.

Moto G5 Rumors and Release Date

A number of images and information about the Moto G5 was leaked in the weeks prior to the official announcement, and some of that information has been not quite accurate. However, with the G5 and G5 Plus officially announced at the end of February 2017, we now know full details on these new smartphones.

Only the Moto G5 Plus will be available in the US, and it is available for pre-order from several online sources including Amazon and Bestbuy. Full release of the G5 Plus is expected at the end of March.

Now let's look at what everyone is interested in, the specs for the new Moto G5.

Moto G5 Plus Specs and Features

The new Moto G5 Plus has a lot of great features packed into a compact frame. It is a solid step up from the G4, with only a small price increase.

The Moto G5 Plus has a 5.2" full HD screen. This is smaller than the G4, which had a 5.5" screen. Both phones have 1920x1080 resolution and the G5 Plus has Gorilla Glass 3.

There are two versions of the G5 Plus available, one with 2 GB RAM and 32 GB memory, the other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB memory. Both versions use the fast, 2.0 Ghz Snapdragon 625 octa core processor.
