Tracfone Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown (S767VL) Review
Welcome to TracfoneReviewer with the latest News, Reviews and Tracfone Promo Codes!Tracfone Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown |
Deal Alert! The J7 Crown is currently available for $69 on Amazon.
The J7 Crown is the first new Samsung phone from Tracfone we've seen in quite some time and replaces the previous generation, the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro.
The New J7 Crown keeps the same size screen as the J7 Sky Pro, but with an increase in quality, and has the same amount of RAM and internal storage.
We have seen Tracfone releasing a number of new phones recently including the LG Stylo 4, Rebel 4, and the Moto E5 and Moto G6. After relatively few new phones during the summer, it is good to see Tracfone providing consumers with a variety of options.
Keep track of all the new phones with our List of the Latest Tracfone Smartphones (2018).
Let's look at the pro's and con's for the J7 Crown.
Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown Quick Facts
What we Like-Android 8.0 Oreo
-13 MP Front and Rear Camera
-Good Battery Life
-Octa-core processor
What we Don't Like
-16 GB Internal Storage
-2 GB RAM
-Price is around $200
With any budget smartphone, there are always some corners that the manufacture will have to cut to keep the price down and in the case of the new J7 Crown, that included the RAM and internal storage which seems to be a trend for Tracfone smartphones.
Yet the 13 MP camera is an attractive feature, as well as the energy efficient processor that helps the J7 Crown maintain a pretty good battery life. And the HD touchscreen is also a highlight with a bright and clear display.
So is it worth the somewhat hefty $200 price tag? That's what we will look into in this review as well as compare it to other popular options currently available like the LG Rebel 4, Moto G6 and Moto E5.
Time for the full list of features on specs on the S767VL J7 Crown.

Many consumers are familiar with the Samsung brand as they are a global manufacture and the largest consumer electronics maker (by revenue) in the world. They are based in South Korea and have a broad lineup of smartphones with their high end device, the Samsung Galaxy S9, a contender for one of the best phones in the world.
The Galaxy J7 Crown does get some of the classic design elements of Samsung phones with a familiar layout for the charging and headphone ports and it also features a Super AMOLED screen which gives deeper colors compared to other screens.
Now let's get into the details with our review of the Galaxy J7.
Tracfone Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown Review
TouchscreenThe J7 Crown comes with the same size screen (5.5") as the previous model (J7 Sky Pro) but improves on the overall quality with deeper colors and better outdoor view-ability. The J7 Crown's screen has HD resolution (720x1280) with about 267 dpi for a fairly crisp display.
This phone does not have an automatic light sensor to dim/brighten the screen depending on the conditions but not many devices in this price range include that.
Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown Review |
Internal Specs - Processor, RAM, Internal Memory
The one highlight for the J7 Crown when it comes to internal specs is the 1.56 Ghz Octa-core processor (Exynos 7884) which provides a great balance between performance and efficiency and goes a long way in helping the device maintain a good battery life.
The Galaxy J7 Crown also has the standard 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage that almost all of Tracfone's recent smartphones offer. For some users, this just isn't enough internal storage. You can add up to 400 GB extra storage via microSD card.
Camera
Somewhat unexpectedly, the Galaxy J7 Crown features both a 13 MP rear camera AND a 13 MP front facing camera. The rear camera has autofocus, LED flash and a number of other features while the front camera is fixed focus but also has flash. This phone is also capable of capturing full HD video at 1080p 30fps.
Battery
A 3300 mAh battery combined with the efficient processor helps the Galaxy J7 achieve good battery performance of 24 hrs talk time and 27 days on standby. Practically speaking this phone should last through the day with a full charge for low to moderate use without any issues. The battery is non-removable in this device.
Android OS
Android 8.1 Oreo, which is included with the Galaxy J7 Crown, brings a number of graphical changes and performance improvements over previous versions. It is used by most Android phones at this time with the newer, Android 9 Pie, currently in the works and not expected to be released for a little while.
Tracfone doesn't update the OS on their smartphones, so it is always a good idea to buy a phone with the latest Android version when possible to avoid possible security issues. There are several other Tracfone smartphones now with Android 8.1 including the LG Rebel 4 and LG Stylo 4.
Check out our list of the Best Android Apps for Tracfone for some great options to use with your smartphone.
Triple Minutes for Life
Tracfone has stopped including Triple Minutes for Life with the phones they release but they are offering to triple airtime added at activation for some phones. We don't have all the details on this but have heard from some sources that smartphones with airtime bundles from HSN/QVC are getting tripled when activated.
Learn more about Tracfone Ending Triple Minutes for Life.
Overall Design
With a matte back and slick overall design the Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown is a nice looking phone at a very popular size. It has the power button on the left and volume on the right side of the phone.
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown is a nice upgrade over the previous version although it keeps the same screen size, RAM, and internal storage. But what you do get is updated Android OS, better screen quality, a better processor and camera.
The lingering question we have is, does that make it worth the $200 price tag? It is hard to say with options like the Moto E5 also recently released by Tracfone which has a larger screen size, same RAM and internal storage, but is listed at $99.
And with the Moto G6 now also available from Tracfone, which has a larger, 5.7" full HD screen and 32 GB storage, 3 GB RAM and dual rear camera, it would be hard for us to choose the Galaxy J7 Crown over the Moto G6. The Crown does have a larger capacity battery, and a number of signature Samsung touches from the design to the additional Operating System features.

I'm thinking of getting the j3 orbit but not sure if it also has a octacore processor as well
ReplyDeleteSamsung J7 Crown on sale now @ Straight Talk for Black Friday Cyber Monday $79.99. Way Better than J3 Orbit - No Brainer - Only $10 more than the Orbit.
DeleteThe orbit has a quad core processor.
DeleteNnoo I bought j3 orbit first it's a lie it it two quad core processors that immate a very weak octacore trust me after 2 weeks i bought the j7 crown and love it way more this phone is way faster and better for 30+ dollars more than the j3 orbit
DeleteHow do enable my NFC I don't see it
DeleteThe Orbit J3 model has an Octa-Core processor. It works great.
DeleteDoes the J7 Crown allow NFC payments? The J7 Sky Pro doesn't and I would like that in an upgrade.
ReplyDeleteI just got the Crown 2 days ago. Yes, mine is NFC capable. Although it's different from some of the specs in this article (no fingerprint reader, Android 8.0, no FM radio).
DeleteJust bought a J7 Crown online at Best Buy on sale for $140 with free shipping. Got it this morning and did a chat session and got it rebranded from Total Wireless to Tracfone with no problem. Then transferred my number and service from my old phone. Took about 20 minutes total. Very nice phone. Upgraded from J7 Sky Pro.
ReplyDeleteDoes the J7 crown have Gorilla Glass?
ReplyDeleteTo Larry S....Best Buy states in that listing the phone is locked, did Tracfone rep have to unlock the Total Wireless phone?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if this phone allows tethering?
ReplyDeleteYes. Under settings / Connection / Mobile Hotspot Tethering
DeleteIt's good to know that you can get the TOTAL WIRELESS phones converted to TRACFONE since Total Wireless phones are often priced more competitively than Tracfone's. Perhaps the Tracfone Reviewer could do a write up on this conversion process. I'm sure there are still lots of tips and tricks we all don't know about these phones. I am a loyal Tracfone user for over 5 years and also just upgraded my Galaxy Sky Pro to the J7 Crown. I tell all my friends, "If you're not using Tracfone, you're paying too much!" It's a well kept secret about the amazing Tracfone service! Why anyone would buy a $1000 phone and than $60 a month for service is beyond my comprehension. ...just saying.
ReplyDeleteI only want it to play Pokemon go. Will it connect to a hot spot and can it handle the game?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your experience, Larry. I was just chatting with Tracfone about buying this phone (linked to Straight Talk) and having my Tracfone balances transferred over. I'm always skeptical, so your post makes me feel better about jumping in to do this.
ReplyDeleteDecided to upgrade from my now slowing Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro from Total Wireless(Child company of Tracfone) that I had bought two years prior, and got the J7 Crown for $99, as I see no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a phone I rarely use, since I do most of my work from my home PC. I'm disappointed to say that this phone does not have a fingerprint sensor as I was expecting it to and that it must not be included in the model I purchased, or it may be a knockoff. However, I'm very pleased with the overall feel, camera, and responsiveness of this phone, great buy despite not including what it was marketed to have contained.
ReplyDeleteWondering if this phone supports wireless charging?
ReplyDeleteTheres a list of devices that do support it, but ull have to google it. It says the j7 crown doesnt support wireless charging. But it is OTG compatible in case ur wondering.
DeleteNo
DeleteOpen mobile phone
DeleteDoes this phone have a hotspot? The previous Galaxy sky pro did not
ReplyDeleteHow do I get my punk unlock code for samsung galaxy J7 crown
ReplyDeleteThis phone does have a light sensor. It does have hotspot, but since hotspot is against the ToS, I have not used it yet. The only thing that is upsetting is no USB-C or Gorilla Glass.
ReplyDeleteTethering does work. It works as a mobile hotspot (broadcast wifi), bluetooth or USB cable tethering.
ReplyDeleteI am also bummed about the lack of fingerprint security, but I still can't believe how far Tracfone has come from the olden days!!!
Does the galaxy j7 crown have fingerprint sensor.? And if so how do you set it up
ReplyDeleteArticle says yes, but the Crown in my hand says no. I used a sensor test app that shows which sensors are present in the hardware and which aren't. Fingerprint reader, step counter, heartrate monitor, etc., do not exist in mine. The only biometric feature it includes is facial recognition.
DeleteDoes the gala cry j7 crown have a finger print reader and if so how do you set it up?
ReplyDeleteTo the people with NFC, how do you enable NFC? My J7 Crown S767VL does not have NFC anywhere in its options.
ReplyDeleteSorry that's wrong. It does have an ambient light sensor. It has an "auto brightness" setting as well as a physical light sensor in addition to gyroscope etc.
ReplyDeleteCurrently on Amazon it's $100. At $200 originally, I would have said don't buy but at $100. It's definitely worth looking into.
ReplyDeleteI downloaded uconnect and when I open it it says I need an update. When I go into update it says I have the latest updates. Any help would be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for a CDMA phone that I can use with another provider (PagePlus). PP told me that I should verify that this phone -- the one sold on Amazon for $99 -- is CDMA rather than GSM.
I looked on Amazon's product page for this phone; the only mention of which technology is from a single user, who said his was GSM. None said theirs was CDMA.
For the J7 SkyPro (of which I think this is an upgrade), there were many, many users who said theirs was CDMA, and none said theirs was GSM.
Can you tell me how you determined that this J7 Crown (S767VL) is actually CDMA (like the J7 SkyPro) rather than GSM?
Thanks!
This phone is terrible. After two weeks it started glitching. Couldn't send or receive texts, couldn't call out or receives calls unless I restart it. Have to restart 6 or 7 times a day! Straight talk was not helpful in the least. I will be getting a different phone and going with a different provider.
ReplyDeleteLove tracfonereviewer, always use it to look read up on new phones. I bought the Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown and was very bitterly disappointed in Samsung over this phone. It does not have an LED indicator light, like my Galaxy Core prime does. The aux connector does not work (although headphones will work). It had no native MP3/ media player, again, like my previous Galaxy AND my samsung tablet did. I'm returning the phone and reactivating my old phone.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great work on this blog, please keep it up.
Target has the total wireless galaxy j7 crown for $49.99, this is a cdma phone.
ReplyDeleteSamsung Galaxy J7 Crown (S767VL) Tracfone
ReplyDeleteHave been using now for a few weeks it does all it says and then some. The only comment is battery life not as expected with average usage I see about 36 hours use, I guess this is normal for higher end smartphone.
Just a little information, since it seems like there is no post about this, Verizon's CDMA network will be dead at the start of next year. So people will need LTE and VoLTE phones for Verizon. People with CDMA phones will need to upgrade unless your phone has LTE and VoLTE enabled. Do not mistake SVLTE and CDMA phones with LTE with this because they will not work since they use CDMA for voice still.
ReplyDeleteAfter a week of use my j7 crown started freezing up and wouldn't even turn off no buttons work and the battery doesn't come out so there is nothing you can do about it!!! Pretty disappointed!!
ReplyDeleteI am still waiting for a reply on this. I see a number of people saying that they have NFC on their J7 Crown. My J7 Crown does not have NFC anywhere in its options. To the people with NFC, how did you enable NFC?
ReplyDeleteWe have a Samsung Galaxy Luna that works great and has never had a problem.
ReplyDeleteTracfone keeps telling us our network is shutting down and we need to replace our phone. The box is marked LTE-V. We don't want a different phone if we can avoid the cost. What is happening? Talked to Tracfone but they kept dancing around our questions. Will our phone just stop working when the day comes? They will lose a lot of customers.
Are you certain the Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown has an AMOLED screen? I do not see that in any other descriptions.

ReplyDeleteHi, does anyone know if this phone can detect and connect to 5 Ghz WiFi? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThere is no NFC available on this particular variant of the phone. That feature is carrier-dependent, and TracFone's version has no support for it. If you buy the TracFone version of the J7 Crown, you will not be able to enable NFC for contactless payments.
ReplyDeleteWill this phone work after 2019 with the Verizon VOLTE transition?
ReplyDeleteIve has the crown for about a week now and I really like it
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI purchased a Samsung Galaxy 7 Crown in March; had for only a week and returned to QVC for replacement device defective could not send or receive MMS or surf the web. Had the replacement phone for a month; and yes it too went bad, OS problems; could not read storage internal or sd reported storage full when it was not. Then the final straw could not answer calls or make calls. Replaced with the Samsung Galaxy 7 Sky Pro and works great. THE CROWN failed.
Yet, I had both from QVC, and both worked great. I replace when the price of the newer phone is cheaper than the price of adding talk, data, text. On QVC, I get both, for, let's say $99 to $129 which is the price of just the use package and I get a new phone too.
DeleteI don't know if it'd be worth it at $200 (Tracfone lists it at just slightly under that,) but I got it at $100 off... and I'm going to be biased, since this replaced a ridiculously slow (but insanely cheap at $30) ZTE Majesty Pro... which you couldn't store much of anything on, and which took ages to do almost anything. So far, while not "top of the line" experience, it's quite a nice, quick phone (and it doesn't have a "top of the line" $1000 price either.)
ReplyDeleteTo answer my own question, this phone can detect and does connect to 5 Ghz WiFi. I bought the $119.99 bundle (1000-minutes, 2000 text messages, 2GB of data with 60 days of service) from Amazon, sold by Tracfone. I've had it for a few weeks and it's been working well so far.
ReplyDeleteJust got the Android 9 pie update and one ui for Samsung j7 Crown. It appears TracFone does update the os.
ReplyDeleteI got the android 9 update too first time i ever got a os update on a tracfone
ReplyDeleteTo the previous person that said Verizon will be shutting down their CDMA network. This is true, however this phone should not be affected since it was made after 2014, has 4G, and likely supports HD Voice as required by verizon's transition to Voice over LTE.
ReplyDeleteMy number indicator on my icons worked only for the first week. I have to open Facebook, Yahoo, and messenger and phone to see all missed posts, email, calls etc Been to Best Buy, Verizon, even a "You break we fix shop" called Total wireless to no fix, no help. I think this model needs to be recalled. I going to get another phone. Oh and any messegages from iPhones dont come on either. I saw this online selling for near 8-9 Hundred dollars then I see best buy selling it for $99.00 so I buy it. Now when I try to get this problem fixed I went to Best Buy and seen the same product selling for 39.00 to 59.00 these are returns. So Best buy is just trying to rid themselves from this model and their inventory of this model.
ReplyDeleteI bought one of these ,because of the price and features. So after i set it up. I recieved a free upgrade to Android 9. It came loaded with Android 8. I was very surprised. I didn't think it would do that. A really great value.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know how to Turn Off and disable Call Waiting on the Galaxy J7 Crown? Total Wireless is useless and don't know how. Google skirts around the issue but doesn't show how.
ReplyDeleteI'm the first to admit I don't know anything, period! But I do read a lot, & I observe what I remember reading. Not much to go on with guess about features in a phone you're about to or have bought recently. I bought the J7 Crown this past week from a black Friday sell out, at Target, local walk in, for $45. I have phones, too many now, but! It was the last one, & the price, hum, not bad! I'm actually shocked at how good this phone is out of the box. Full HD 1080 x 30 fps video, 13 MP stills front & rear, wow, I couldn't have bought a camera that good for that cheap, & I got a free phone with the camera... Everything can be stored on a micro SD @ 400 GB. If the ARM cpu, can run a robot, than this 8 core can kick up the dust, even with 2 GB of memory, everything is happening so fast, the memory never has the time to fill up. No FM? Well I don't know. I read, many phones have the chips but requires the correct software app to activate the chips for FM. If the company streams music, they don't want you listening to FM radio, so they don't publish an app unless it is in a special factory install OS app package. I have the app in my early model Samsung & it works great with apple buds. I would not install an app if I didn't find it on the phone app store. If the app never shows up, than that phone likely does not have the Tuner chips on the MB. Twenty seven days of standby gives me enough time to find my phone if I misplace it for sure. I like that! It turned on flawlessly on the Total Wireless. Some phone packages update the OS, some don't. Depends on what the factory installed OS/app package is to begin with, as to if the OS will update. Some will, some won't update. I think this J7 Crown, is a nice phone with a good camera, & very low power drain on the battery! Everything else seems to be average to the connection speed, like AC, or N, both very fast, usually faster than the servers that you are trying to connect to. You think Google gives you a GB of bandwidth when you connect to their web page? Dream on!The use vs the functionality of today's smart phones are rapidly reaching common functionality among many global manufactures. It is all in how the functionality is presented to the individual user, that counts the most.
ReplyDeleteFYI, contrary to the review text, TracFone's J7 Crown does NOT have NFC support - Does anyone know if this is a software-lock, or if the NFC transceiver hardware itself has been removed from this variant?
ReplyDeleteIf it's a software lock, can it be unlocked by rooting the phone?
Does this phone support GSM network or it is a CDMA only phone.
ReplyDelete
