  3. Is there a way to turn off the lock on the Alcatel phone! Never had a phone I NEEDED to unlock to use before?

    1. There should be a place in the settings menu that allows you to turn off the locking feature. But it is a very nice feature to help you avoid pushing buttons while it is in your picket or bag. So I would recommend keeping it.

    2. have been using tracfone over 3 yrs. last 3 times that i entered card number and then entered promo code 12745 for 60 min card,it tells me to contact customer service to complete transaction. then i spend 12 to 20 min of my minutes trying to get the correct bonus minutes. i have never been given those min. back. when current min expires, I will throw phone in trash and use different brand. I believe they do this to keep from giving the min.drware@sbcglobal.net

  4. hello, i am here to inform you that the website has a javascript bug.

i have tried browsers: IE, Firefox, Chrome, but unable to use the java script at the bottom of the page to "load more comments."

this is crucial because the last post that i can see is april 13th.. i am unable to see any posts past April 13th because the "load more comments" java script at the bottom of the page doesnt work properly. it says loading but gives error never loads...

please fix so everyone else can see the additional comments...maybe instead of having it as the first post first (december of 2012), make the most recent post first...idk please figure it out :)

  5. This is a great source for Tracfone information! Thank you! I am having a terrible time, however, with knowing how to save text messages. My inbox is crazy full, and I can't delete them (not that I "can't", I just don't want to). Is there some way to save them to a file somewhere on the phone (I don't know the difference between saving them to the phone vs. the memory card...and what is the sim app, and how is it used?) SO many questions! I love my LG840g, but I'm still not quite up to speed on how to use the thing.

  6. Just used code 74316 and Got 60 minutes bonus on a 120 min card for a phone that was double for life. So total was 300 minutes for $30! $.10 a minute for a phone these days, great deal.. Thanks for the blog. I will back here in the future.

  7. You are the bomb! Thank you. I love using Tracfone-no contracts, add minutes when I need to. 60 bonus minutes on my 120 minute card is awesome. Double minutes-somehow, I got 360 minutes.
    Again, thank you!!

  8. Hi, thanks for all the great info. One question, my service days expired on 7/2/2013 and I (mistakenly) thought I had 60 days to transfer my number & minutes to a new tracfone. According to Tracfone CS, I had to do it before my service days expired. Have you ever heard of a way to get them to reactivate my old phone just so I can transfer the number and minutes? They say I have to buy a $20 card and reactivate my old phone. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you so much for this blog.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's unfortunate about your phone expiring just days ago. I don't know of any way to reactivate a phone without buying minutes, but I do know that your minutes should get transferred to the new phone as long as you let them know how many minutes you have.

Also, if you go to the tracfone website, you can get just 30 minutes for $10 rather than buying the 60 minute card.

Hope that helps, and again, make sure to let them know you have minutes you want transferred and they should do it. Maybe even the service days too!

  14. What size (4, 8, 16 or 32GB) and class (4, 10 or UHS-1) micro SDHC card would you recommend for the ZTE Valet? Some retailers include a 4GB class 4 with it.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The 4GB card the phone comes with should be adequate for most things. If you know you will need a lot of space, there are many 8 and 16 GB options that should work great. Only go with 32 GB if you really need a lot of space.

  15. I am almst 70 years old and have bought on line pay as you go minutes since 2001. This time I can't get past the first screen - entering the seriel number and the promo code. No error message. I did it at the Library and a friend's computer. I sent Tracfone a comment and was given instructions only a person under 20 could figure out about deleting cahe and cookies. Can't control the library cmputers and can't cntrol my friend even if I know how to stop cookies and what cache is.

  16. My friend bought the Huawei Glory, but is having trouble with the keyboard, as the numbers are very small, even set to the largest font it offers. I cannot find information on the other tracfone Androids, does any one have a larger keyboard that is easier for old, big fingers to use, I cannot find info anywhere comparing the keyboards and numbers. Thanks

  17. Have you or has anyone figured out a way to use data minutes for text messages on the smartphones? Like an app or something? Since they are the same price per unit, it'd be cheaper to just talk for a minute than to text (it used to be 3 texts per 1 unit, but not anymore).

  18. Got ZTE Valet for my daughter for Christmas. However, after spending hours on the phone with Tracfone (their tech support is horrible, as I have issues everytime I have to call), they are telling me the phone cannot be used in my area. No way to transfer her old number, and then was going to give her a new number, but alas, that can not be done either, apparently. She is so disappointed, as she really wants a smart phone, but I am not willing to pay the big boys the expensive plan price, so when tracfone came out with them, I was thrilled (we have been tracfone people for years.). BUt now, I am confused. I live in a larger area with around 80,000 people, so it's not like we are in a remote area. Anyone else have this trouble, or have answers. Talking to tech support is like talking to a wall.....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, yes tracfone support tends to be very difficult to use. Do you have any other CDMA cell phones? Or, how is Verizon service in your area? Because if Verizon has good enough service in your area, you could simply register the phone in a different area, and use it where you live. But you run the risk of it not having service.

      Delete
  19. Thanks, Peter. I actually did think about doing that - I tried entering various zip codes on the tracfone website where you buy the phones, and got my parents zip code (much more remote area, go figure), which is about 2 hours north of here to have the ZTE valet phone come up as an option. It doesn't for my zip code, but I was able to buy it at a Best Buy here in town. I do not have any other CDMA phones, we've been basic tracfone users all along. I'm not sure how Verizon service is in this area - what would be the best way to find that out? If good, I assume I would just activate the phone using my parent's zip code??? Sorry, I'm not much of a techie, at all!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure how you would test it, perhaps asking others around you if they use verizon, or going to a cell phone shop and talking with them. You could just go for it, and if the ZTE doesn't work then try returning it, although that can be a hassle with Tracfone. Yes, you would just activate it via your parents zip.

I need to buy a used smartphone, either a Samsung Galaxy S3 or iphone 4 that I can use with Square card reader and transfer to Tracfone. Do these qualify for BYOP? Do they have to be "unlocked"? Do they have to be Verizon version? Will they work in my zip code (I have used Tracfone for 5 yrs on Cape Cod)? Can I transfer my 2000+ minutes?

  25. I bought a TracFone ZTE Valet phone and CANNOT set up the voice mail. When I got on the computer and it asked for my serial number, I typed it in and they won't help me set it up, saying you can't set up voice mail without it being digital. Is the phone a digital phone? I can't find anywhere in the booklet that says it is digital. WHen I tried to set up the voice mail by dialing the phone, they tell me they are sorry I am having trouble and that an operator isn't available and to call later. I am SO UPSET and sorry that I ever bought this phone. I have always swore by TracFone but this one is the pits. If I can't get this to work, I will take it back to Kmart and DEMAND my money back. Please, can someone help or answer my question about whether it is digital or not

  30. Do you know how many message equals one minute in the android tracfone

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. With the Android phones minutes are split into three pools of talk, text and data. For each minute you add to the phone, you get one talk minute, one text, and one mb data. (You also get this tripled with Triple Minutes for Life)

So you basically get 1 text per minute. If you added a 60 minute card, you would get 180 talk minutes, 180 texts, and 180 mb data.

  48. Peter, do you believe Tracfone will offer 4G LTE phones through their website by the end of 2015? Also, if I purchase a new Verizon phone (e.g. a Transpyre) at my local Walmart could I activate it on Tracfone? Thank you😀

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think Tracfone will offer their own 4G LTE phones by the end of the year, but maybe sometime in the next year. However, it would be relatively easy for them to implement this, since they already have the network. I don't know about the Transpyre, is it a Verizon prepaid phone? Any of Verizon's contract phones, which are not currently under contract, should work. Prepaid phones may work.

I am looking at changing from Sprint to Tracfone. One reason is that my wife has a Tracfone (flipphone, LG440G), and her coverage is way better than mine. This is on GSM. My Sprint phone is CDMA.
I need a smartphone, and I read on the blogsite that smartphones under GSM don't roam seamlessly, and I may not get the great coverage that my gets. Customer service told me this is not true. What do I believe? I have to buy a new phone to change, and I can't afford for this to be a mistake.

  68. I want say thank you for having Tracfone Reviewer !! I just bought a leftover new 16GB iphone 4S GSM and transferred my number, minutes, and all and it took about a half day for it all to transfer but it worked. I am about to transfer a second phone the same way. I bought my SIM cards at Walmart. We will see how this works over the next year and if they can keep the minutes, texts and data competitive. I have been using Tracfones for about 12 years starting with the kids heading to college. My daughter always said I want a real cell phone and I said when you are out of college and paying your own bills you can chose whatever you want to pay for. If the Apple iphones had been available earlier she might not have been so horrified by Dad's frugality. Tracfone is been quirky and sometimes things take hours to resolve but they are inexpensive and for me that is the bottom line. With the BYOP program they are getting into the new century. Again, thanks for your tips and promo codes, I just wish I had found this website sooner !!!!!

I do only voice & text messaging, and need physical controls & QWERTY keyboard, which none of those they offer in my area have.

  75. What a great blog! This site has helped me tremendously and is responsible for me continuing to use Tracfone after my old 2G phone was dropped. Along with Amazon and eBay, Tracfone should definitely be kicking some funds your way. Thanks for all the info.

  76. Hi Peter, love your blog! Just curious: does the info here apply to any Tracfone sub-brands like Net10 or Straight Talk? Or are there similar blogs for those brands? Thanks for your help.

    1. Some info may, but the different brands do operate a bit differently. I don't know of any blogs for the other brands, but there are some forums like howardforum.

  77. I have inherited a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. It can be activated on the Verizon network. Is it possible to get a sim card and activate a tablet with Tracfone and use only data? Thanks for any insight.

    1. It may work, and seems worth a try since you can get a SIM card from BestBuy for $1.

  79. hello sir
I've bought a lot of tracfone devices(L41C,L38c,L39c,S765,...), but why always there is no stock firmware's ? or a flash tool to install the system? or download and recovery mode? we have problems some times and we need something to fix it.
    thank you.

  80. Peter, I can't get the blog post 'Tracfone BYOP Phone List' to show comments newer than Dec 2015. I click the 'load more comments' button and it says 'loading' but nothing happens. I've tried in both mobile and Windows desktop browsers. Maybe too many comments?

  81. Thank you for this great resource!

One thing i'd like to ask is that future reviews include whether the phones include a compass, accelerometer, and gyro. It seems that more and more phones are omitting these valuable sensors - even some of the "mid" level phone. This is sad to see. Please help by documenting the presence/ absence of these features.

  82. I value the posts and research this site provides and have been a serious Tracfone user for 3 years and many tracfones. I recently learned of a FCC settlement with Tracfone regarding unlocking their phones which I have not seen covered here. The settlement terms can be read at https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/wps/portal/home

I plan to contact tracfones unlocking department as soon as my current LG Treasure has met the 12 month minimum subscription period to request unlocking. Last month I went on a cruise from the US and desperately needed a phone to work in the Caribbean. I did not want to buy another phone for 1 week. After I unlock the LG tracfone I will be able to easily buy a compatible simm card and use a carrier like TMobile.
    Thanks John

  83. RE John

That's very interesting, I had heard that Tracfone got in trouble for not unlocking their phones, but wasn't sure what the outcome of it was. Sounds like not all phones can be unlocked, but likely their newer smartphones.

  84. Today is April 21, 2017. I have used this code twice and it worked perfectly both times. Buy a 450 min card, get 500 bonus min using code 69151. Supposed to be valid until Dec 31, 2017.

  85. Hi, thank you for all you great TF Research. Can you tell me please what carrier (GSM/CDM) would come with the Tracfone

The iPhone SE from Tracfone uses CDMA networks (Verizon).

  88. Thank you Peter! May I ask another question please? I was looking at your review of the ZTE ZMAX 2 with the GSM platform. It is offered on HSN as you mentioned but this model does not come up in my zip code on the Tracfone web site. Would that be a problem if I bought this phone from HSN? Would it still get activated properly and coverage be the same as if it was offered in my zip code by Tracfone?
    Thank you so much..

    ReplyDelete
  89. Re: Allen Bret

A GSM device may work in your area, have you used a GSM device there before? How is AT&T service there? If there is good service, you're probably fine buying the ZTE phone. You probably will need a zipcode that Tracfone will accept for GSM activation so have that ready.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Thanks Peter for your helpful response.
Yes, I do currently have a GSM Tracfone activated in my zipcode. ATT is the best carrier here and that is what drew me to the ZTE. I did a zip check on the HSN site for this phone and it came back acceptable. So, can I conclude that any GSM Tracfone should activate properly here, regardless if it was purchased on the TF site or HSN or Walmart?

    Thanks
    Allen

  94. I have been a tracfone customer for over ten years. I have been very pleased with them up until last week. I had purchased a ZTE smart flip phone back in December from HSN and never really cared for that phone too big bulky and people could never hear me unless I cupped my hand around the mouth piece. But anyway to last week. I purchased an Apple IPhone 5s from The tracfone website. When I transferred my old phone 2.35GB of data did not transfer. After several conversations on Facebook messenger with Tracfone and calling the 800 number twice and having the pleasure of speaking to people I could hardly hear or understand the issue still has not been resolved. The last person I talked to told me I used all my data even though I know I didn't and the phone even says I have used zero data. Before transferring the phone I checked the app on my phone and the tracfone website both said I had 2.35GB of data but after the transfer I have none and their only explanation is I used it. Tracfone at Facebook has told me to contact the 800 number again after leaving a negative comment on their Facebook page . I wonder at this point what good that would do.

  96. I do like tracfones phone service. I even like the people in Sebu, Philippines. I have a LG 3g phone - 441G that Tracfone made me change to a couple of years ago. Those people in Sebu were helpful but were unsuccessful in the upgrade. I rarely use the phone and it was easier to get a new phone #. They ended up taking my word on how many minutes the old phone had.

I have about 6000 minutes on this phone. I'd like to get a BYOP phone. I'd probably start using some of those minutes with a smart.

What would the transfer minutes, text, data wise end up being? I can't see them giving me 6K, 6K + 6K. Most everything I've read seems to be you are coming into tracfone as a new customer with a BYOP.

If I had issues with a 2G to 3G upgrade using their phone, my fear is if the same thing happens this time and this time they don't take my word on the # of minutes, I am SOL but at least I can go to another carrier with an unlocked phone.

  98. A couple times now I've received a text from Tracfone (SMS short code 77089) with the text "Get $100 when you take part in a research study." They tell you to text back to 41411 (which some sites claim is a hinky number).

It sounds bogus and yet it comes from Tracfone.

Anyone have insight into what this is? Has Tracfone been hacked?

  102. Tried to use promo code 50808 which it says it is for 80 bonus minutes. That is false it only gives you 20 bonus minutes. That promo code 50808 is false advertisement. I used it and was short changed 60 bonus minutes. Watch when using promo codes. Not always what they seem to be. Called tracfone about it and they couldn't do anything for me. So I'm out 60 bonus minutes. Like I said beware of promo codes when using them.

  104. Interesting - Tracfone texted me a reminder to add minutes and provided me with the promo code 50808 and texted if I added 60 minutes I would receive 140minutes total... when I loaded in this code, it stated that this code is not available for my phone. So, i went to the store, bought a basic phone card, and then searched for any deals on line. OMG!! you all here rocked my world today and surpassed anything I thought was available. Code12745 worked for me and provided an additional 120 min! THANK YOU! Next paycheck I should be sending you coffee! lol

  105. Have you ever thought of reversing the comments and putting the new comments at the top and the old comments towards the bottom? This way we wouldn't have to scroll through all the old comments to see the new ones. Just a thought.

  106. Could you enable folks to reply to a comment (reply to a certain person) so that the reply appears right below the other persons comment and NOT way down the page like 50-100 comments later?

  107. Agree with previous posters that the comment section would be much easier to use if it had the newest posts listed first.

Anyway, Thank you very much for having this site and the promo codes available. I used the 14223 promo today to get an extra 500mb with a IG purchase ($10)

  108. We have been using tracfone for probably 15 years now, for the most part we like them unless you have a problem.
A few months ago my daughters phone(iphone6 byop) started randomly using up texts that she was not sending or receiving. we went round and round with tracfone about this to no avail.we just stopped buying texts because they would all be used up way before she would use them. If anybody has any thoughts on this your help would be appreciated.

  109. In May you posted a update about VERIZON putting off upgrading 2G and 3G to another year (2020) giving TRACFONE users more time with their current phones. I have asked 2 different people with TRACFONE and I am still told that I must upgrade my perfectly working iphone 5S by the end of this year or will loose service. What is going on? I would love to keep this phone for another year.
