Tracfone iPhone 4 and 4S - Use with Tracfone BYOP

It is Possible to use the iPhone 4/4S with Tracfone - Here is How:

Use an iPhone 4 and 4S with Tracfone service

First, here is some back story on the iPhone coming to Tracfone:

We recently (a few months back now) got a tip from a visitor that Tracfone may be accepting iPhone 4 and 4S for use with their 'Bring Your Own Phone' program which already allows users to bring CDMA smartphones to use with Tracfone service.

If you visit the following link, it appears that the iPhone 4 and 4S will work with Tracfone service:

iPhone 4/4S with Tracfone Service

We have since received significant feedback confirming that both the iPhone 4 and 4S (Verizon) will work with Tracfone's Bring Your Own Phone program. See the comments below for more information.

So, it is possible to use an iPhone, like this CDMA iPhone 4 on Amazon with Tracfone service. Just remember that it must be a used CDMA iPhone that is setup for use on Verizon,.

Many Tracfone users are already reporting that phones like the Motorola Droid 3,  or HTC Incredible (but maybe not the Moto G (Verizon)) are working with Tracfone's BYOP program, so it is exciting that they will be expanding the phone options to Apple products.

Just remember that for now, phones need to be Used Verizon CDMA to work with Tracfone.

We have now confirmed that iPhone 4 and 4S (Verizon) will work with Tracfone. If you are wondering where to find a phone, Amazon has a number of used iPhones for under $100!

How to Add Your iPhone 4 or 4S to Tracfone BYOP

Here is a simple guide for those interested in using an iPhone 4 or 4S with Tracfone, but are unsure of which phone to get, and how to navigate the process.

1. You will need to find a used Verizon iPhone 4 or 4S. Here are some links to places where you can get a used phone:

iPhone 4S on eBay (Verizon)

Take a look at the options and find the best phone or price for you. The iPhone 4S is a little newer than the 4, comes with Siri and a few other upgrades, but is also a bit more expensive.

2. You should look into Verizon service in your area (before you buy the phone) and determine if it will work for you. If you already have a CDMA phone that works, you should be fine.

You can also use the MEID from the iPhone with your zip-code to check if it will work (but this isn't always possible if you're buying it online). To do this, go to Tracfone's BYOP page and enter the information.

3. Once you determine that a Verizon iPhone will work in your area (or are at least willing to give it a shot!), go to Tracfone.com and follow the instructions for activating a new phone. You can also do this over the phone by calling Customer Service. You will need to purchase a $10 network activation card.

Some people have reported a seamless transition to their new iPhone while others have faced a run around for some reason. The quirks of Tracfone's BYOP program are still being worked out, so some patience may be necessary.

To track your minutes and service days, you can download the Tracfone app, or simply visit the Tracfone website and sign into your account.

Please share below in the comments your experience with adding an iPhone to Tracfone, or your questions relating to it.

Can anyone confirm that the iPhone 4 and 4S with Tracfone have Triple Minutes? Thanks!

If you're not so interested in trying to figure out whether a phone will work with Tracfone, consider the newer LG Optimus Dynamic II, which comes with some great features, and under $100.

ok I just did this and it was pretty smooth especially if you already are on Tracfone, like I was, so I went to the BYOD page from the top and entered my MEID number, and it took me to the next screen where you had to pick what you where doing adding a new number or phone or transferring number, I picked second one which was transferring my Tracfon number to a new phone, it had me do a couple more things but after that was done, and waited couple of hours then called, found out that in order to complete the whole process you have to take the Iphone you just setup and dial *22890 it will then go thru process to finish activating your phone. I was good after that

I just registered a samung s4, it took a 1 hour online chat to do it but it worked out. It took another chat to get minutes transferred but that also worked okay. It really must be a verizon phone that is clear (not stolen) it does not have to be unlocked as most verizon phones are not locked. If you start looking online for the phone you want and put tracfone in your search you may start to get popup ads from tracfone that offer byop's that are not for sell on their website. I saw Samsungs and Iphones at a fairly decent price and they looked legit.

You can purchase data only for the iPhone 4s. But only the 2gb for $50, and it does not triple like when you get it with minutes.

Has anyone had to switch from their smartphone back to their flip phone or older tracfone? I need my screen repaired but I'm concerned about what will happen to my data minutes. I just reloaded the day before I broke the screen. Thanks!

I've checked the IMEI numbers on some unlocked phones prior to getting this one and they did not work. Bottom line is. Locked or unlocked, it has to have been used on a Verizon network for at least 6 months. I went through eBay. I sent the seller a message requesting their IMEI number to verify it would work on tracfone's network. Now some will, and that's great! But some won't, and hey, that's their right, don't be discouraged as their are a lot of phones on eBay, I settled on this black 64gb iPhone 4S listed as mint for 123.00. Got it and found that the flash didn't work. He refunded me 16.00 for a new flash (always try to deal with sellers with a 100% rating when buying electronics on eBay). So I got and repaired the flash and it's all good. The iPhone 5s doesn't offer the memory capacity as this one and good luck finding a used Verizon iPhone 6 or 6S with six months on the clock. Hope this helps...

did you purchase it on the Tracfone website? I am still seeing only data cards for Android there.

Unknown said...

Yes, this purchase was made online. It won't work for the smaller increments but it works for 2gb

I just bought a refurbished iPhone 5 from Quality One Wireless. They are an affiliate of Tracfone. After charging the battery, I called Tracfone direct and had them transfer my old number as well as voice/data/text minutes to the new phone. It went just fine and everything works well. I am trying to find out how to add more data (Tracfone data-only cards say they are for Android phones only). I am happy with the phone and the service and can now recommend Quality One Wireless if you want an iPhone rather than a Tracfone Android :-)

I just activated my iPhone 5 from Verizon on Tracfone service and everything works great.

I have been trying to activate an iPhone 4 I just received from a relative. I put in my information and found that my phone was compatible. However, when I click to purchase a virtual activation kit, it says that it is unable to process transaction. I have been to many stores with no luck at finding an activation kit. Also, if I have a Tracfone number already, can I port it to my iPhone once it is activated?

Anonymous said...

That's probably because you purchased it from a bad source. I bought a used 4s and it does have some battery issues, Siri was not designed FOR the 4s to begin with, but all else works fine. If you're on IOS 7 or below, DO NOT upgrade to IOS 8.

I purchased this it works perfect. I had a previous tracfone and had my number transfered to the new iphone. I did have some trouble setting up online. I called tracfone support and they had me up and running in a few minutes.

Yes, I just got off the phone with them and they confirmed that iPhones are always triple minutes. I've found the best value if you're looking for low minutes/texts/data is to do the 60 minute card for $19.99 (10% discount if you do recurring). I get 180 minutes/180 texts/180 MB data a month for $6 + tax a month. Can't beat that for a smartphone!

Transferred to an iPhone 4s Tracfone and everything works/went great EXCEPT the amount of rings before it goes to voicemail is WAYtoo many and I doubt anyone would wait that long to leave a message. Does anyone have the same issue? Tracfone help is lacking and I can't seem to find a solution to this. Any help would be greatlyappreciated!

Bought an iphone 4s 64 GB at a yard sale. It was bought in Japan and the sim it had was for KDDI a cdma phone company ive been told. Anyway put in the tracfone AT&T gsm sim card and the phone recognized the sim right away. Did all the rigamoroll it was frustrating but after letting the phone rest overnight it worked. EXCEPT-Cannot send photos as an attachment in email or text.... And cannot access the internet even tho it shows up on my account, Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem Am leery to call tech support.

HI! Great site. Good info.My iphone 64 GB 4s story- Bought it used. Originally sold and used in Tokyo, Japan on the KDDI AU, CDMA phone system.Have no idea if it had been unlocked. Used the Tracfone BYOP sim kit and transferred my old number. Placed the AT&T sim in the iphone and the phone immediately recognized it.Followed the instructions for installation-but no phone service. As it was nearly 1 AM { iam a night owl } decided to say goodnight. The next day it was up and running. No calling Tracfone for help. BUT there are 2 problems - 1-I cannot send a photo within a text-- texting is no problem tho. and 2-- cannot get onto the internet using DATA. Any Ideas??? Thanx

I got a used Verizon iPhone 4 (white) about a month ago on Amazon for $45.95. Now let me start off by telling you that without this site I would have never found out about the byop program. Before this iPhone I had a tracfone LG Ultimate 2, I HATED IT!!! I had always wanted an iPhone so I saw this and decided with a lot of research to try it out. It arrived in the mail in extremely good condition, I set it up no problem, and then called tracfone to see if I could activate it. The lady on the other line was very nowledgeable and had the iPhone making calls, and sending texts within 10 minutes! Thank you! I love my iPhone! Next time I'm going to try activating an iPhone 6s with the tracfone 4G LTE network...

Many you may know by now, but it is possible to bring an AT&T iPhone to TracFone using the BYOP activation kit. I was able to do with it with both an AT&T iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5. It was very easy to do. Porting a phone number over from Straight Talk (which was a Verizon phone number) was done the same day.

No,
iMessage is used thru WiFi.
So her data/minutes won't be used when using iMessage.

Did you receive triple minutes after the transfer?

Does the carrier have to be verizon or can it be another carrier?

I'm a longtime Tracfone user. I live in a very hilly area where cellular service is spotty, so Tracfone shapes up to be the better deal for my limited cellular use. I would like to move up from my old-style flip-cell to an iPhone, possibly a 6 or 6+. But how does one shop for a deal on a non-carrier iPhone? I'd like to get one with 32 to 64 GB of storage.

Hi, I just transferred my tracfone number to iPhone 4 and it took me about 3-4 minutes. First, I tried to check the MEID number online, it did not process. I had to chat with the customer service and explain what I wanted to do. They assisted me, and gave me instructions how to complete the transfer. With first trial it worked, and I was able to complete phone calls.

So i just did this yesterday, 2016-10-03.

Needed supplies:
Unlocked iPhone 4s or later (Verizon remote unlocked all 4s phones earlier this year)
TracFone "Bring Your Own Device" starter kit (~$10 or less)
TracFone "Smartphone Only" plan card (~$15 for a small starter plan to make sure it goes through)
A second phone to call it in.

The confusing part - Even though the Verizon 4s works on CDMA, DO NOT USE the CDMA "For Phones used on Verizon" SIM in the phone - Tracfone will say it "gives an error that you shall need a different phone". I used the AT&T SIM and then followed the steps on the packaging. Worked well although it required two reboots of my 4s. The T-Mobile SIM might have worked also but since AT&T did the trick i stopped futzing with stuff.

As for the tripling - it seems that "Smartphone" cards do NOT triple, others do.

recently upgraded my tracfone iphone 4 to a brand new iphone 5 bought at Target (185) the phone is actually a tracfone TFW phone. Was able to do the transfer on my computer keeping the old number and all my accumulated data and minutes. Now can facetime on cellular. Phone works perfectly

> I call it the iPhone 4C

I like your idea!
I activated my "iPhone 4C" today. Nothing seemed to be happening, I restarted my iPhone several times but it did not connect to TracFone. Then I learned, one must dial that magic number. That worked. Remember to dial *22890 before despairing!

That's good news but I'm afraid of activating w/tracphone because last android activation was a nightmare. Hate the phone even though it wss a free uograde.

After going thru all the BS to unlock my tired iPhone 4 I had with AT&T come to find out it's not compatible with track phone.
That sucks!
