Tracfone Increases Data on Unlimited Cards (Are They A Good Deal Now?)

Tracfone Quietly Ups Data Amounts on All Unlimited Cards

Tracfone unlimited plans

In a move likely aimed to make their unlimited talk/text plans more attractive and competitive, Tracfone increased the data for each of their cards.

These updates come at about the same time as Verizon Rebranding and Relaunching Total Wireless as Total by Verizon. And we can't help but think it is part of a broader effort by Tracfone's new owner, Verizon, to restructure plans and encourage more customers to move to unlimited options.

While the unlimited plans give great benefits for the price, they are also more expensive than most of Tracfone's other airtime cards. And Tracfone has a strong base of very price-conscious, and savvy, customers.

Here's the breakdown of the new data amounts for Tracfone unlimited cards.

Tracfone Unlimited Plans

These are Tracfone's current unlimited plan options:

unlimited cards from tracfone

$15 - unlimited talk/text - 30 service days - no data (no change)
$20 - unlimited talk/text - 30 service days - 2GB Data (increased from 1GB)
$25 - unlimited talk/text - 30 service days - 3GB Data (increased from 2GB)
$30 - unlimited talk/text - 30 service days - 4GB Data (increased from 3GB)
$40 - unlimited talk/text - 30 service days - 8GB Data (no change)
$199 - unlimited talk/text - 365 service days - 24GB Data (increased from 12GB)

As you can see, not all of the plans benefited from the data increase, with the $15 and $40 plans seeing no change.

The $199 plan saw the biggest increase, doubling the amount of data to 24GB, making it a much more interesting option. With a full year of service, this plan comes out to just $16.59 per month and an average of 2 GB data per month.

All of the other cards saw 1GB additional data added, which makes them a little more reasonable and practical.

Are Tracfone's Unlimited Plans a Good Deal?

That all depends on how much talk, text and data you use.

The best unlimited option from Tracfone is the $199/1 Year plan that comes with 24GB data. For those willing to buy a whole year of service in advance, you'll save $40 over the $20 plan which gives the same amount of data over 12 months.

Here's the deal with Tracfone unlimited plans: If you are using more than 2GB data per month, you may want to look for alternative service providers.

We outlined several great alternatives to Tracfone in a recent post that all generally provide more data (or unlimited data) for $20-40.

Mint Mobile, for example, offers a $180 plan that comes with 1 year of service, unlimited talk/text, and 4GB/mo of data. That's just $15/mo, however, it is on T-Mobile's network.

Visible, owned by Verizon, offers a $25/mo unlimited talk/text/data plan (when you're in a party of 4+).

One feature Tracfone does offer, that we don't see many places elsewhere, is unlimited data carryover. If you only use 1GB data in one month, the remaining amount will carryover to the next month, just like their other airtime cards.

As all long-term Tracfone users know, the best part of it is you get to choose what prepaid options to buy based on how much you use, and anything you don't use, gets carried over to the next month. But this also means you have to keep track of how much airtime or data you are using, and how many service days you have left. And sometimes an unlimited option just makes life a little easier.

Verizon Revamps Total Wireless - Will They Change Tracfone Too?

Verizon Adds New Plans on Total Wireless, Rebrands as Total by Verizon

Verizon changes Total wireless

Big changes have come to Total Wireless, owned by parent company Tracfone, which was acquired by Verizon in 2021. These changes include a complete rebranding, and new plans.

Total Wireless is now Total, by Verizon, and has new prices and plans for it's prepaid service. In general, the plans are a similar price, and offer more data. But for unlimited data, customers will have to pay $50-$60, and at that price, there are plenty of other competitive options.

For price-conscious Tracfone customers, the question is, will Verizon be making significant changes to plans and prices on Tracfone? We haven't heard of any updates, but this may be the first step in Verizon's long-term plan for the Tracfone brand, and family of brands.

Changes to Total Wireless (Now Total by Verizon)

The main changes to Total are a rebranding, and updated prices and plans.

Total by Verizon - New Plans:

$30/mo - Unlimited Talk/Text and 5GB Data

$40/mo - Unlimited Talk/Text and 15GB data

$50/mo - Unlimited Talk/Text/Data plus additional benefits

$60/mo - Unlimited Talk/Text/Data plus unlimited Talk/Text to 69 countries, Disney Plus, and more

new plans for tracfone

All of these plans come with certain amounts of hotspot data as well, and unlimited talk/text to Canada and Mexico. Additional data is just $10 for 5GB.

Tracfone also offers a $30/mo unlimited Talk/Text plan, but it comes with only 4GB data. And Tracfone's $40 unlimited plan comes with only 8GB data. So these plans from Total offer more data, for the same price.

But, Tracfone offers several cards and plans at a much lower cost compared to Total, such as the $20 unlimited talk/text plan with 2GB data. And, as we all know, Tracfone is the better choice for budget buyers and those that don't need a lot of data.

Bottom line: Total by Verizon's plans are focused more on the high-end prepaid customer. Their $50 and $60 plans are just too expensive for the average prepaid users and there are a number of cheaper unlimited plan options out there, as we outlined in our list of the Best Alternatives to Tracfone. These include Visible (owned by Verizon), Google Fi, Mint, and Tello which all offer unlimited talk/text/data options for under $40.

While Total's $30 and $40 are interesting, they only benefit users who fit that specific category of data usage (5-15GB used per month). And there's no mention about data carryover that we could find.

When Will Verizon Make Changes to Tracfone?

We've actually seen some minor changes recently, which consisted of data amounts for the unlimited cards getting updated, but we haven't seen any major changes and nothing has been released at this time to suggest any big changes coming to Tracfone.

Tracfone's website has been extremely problematic. With many customers reporting everything from account access issues, to being unable to add or buy airtime. Plus, Promo Codes have been unreliable, with some codes working for one account or phone, but not another.

It is possible that Verizon is working on developing a rebranding for Tracfone, and thus is letting some of these major website issues go until a new site is launched. Or Verizon may just be focusing attention on some of Tracfone's other brands, and ignoring the issues all-together.

Whatever the case may be, we know that Verizon is working to get all Tracfone users switched over to the Verizon network, and sometime in the near future they likely won't offer access to any other network besides their own.

Will Verizon change Tracfone airtime cards and plans? That seems unlikely, but not out of the question.
