LG 440G Review - Tracfone

A Feature Packed Flip Phone From Tracfone

The LG 440G is a compact flip phone that packs a nice punch with several great features.

Two of the most notable features for the LG 440G are 3G connectivity, and low price. Not only will surfing the web on the phone's mobile browser be fast, but you can get thise phone for less than $20.

The LG 440G looks like a simple flip phone, but with the impressive features, it is a nice upgrade from other, older Tracfone flip phones.

Let's look at the full feature list next.

LG 440G Features and Specifications

While WiFi and 3G are great features, there are several more features with this phone that are also useful.

  • Mobile Web
  • 3G Connectivity
  • 1.3 MP Camera and Video Recorder
  • MP3 Player
  • Hands Free Speaker
  • Voice and Sound Recorder
  • Voice Dialing
  • Alarm Clock
  • 1000 Entry Phonebook
  • Battery Life on Standby 7-10 Days
  • Hearing Aid Compatible
  • Airtime Balance Display
  • Double Minutes for Life
  • (Initially reported to have WiFi, but does not!)

Likes and Dislikes for the LG 440G

Let's begin with the Likes

The LG 440G comes with many great features for a flip phone from Tracfone.

We already mentioned the 3G feature.  The 3G means that the LG 440G uses a faster network than most older phones, making surfing the web on the phone's mobile browser quicker.

Another big like about this phone is the 1.3 MP camera. While certainly nothing fancy, it is adequate. And pictures can be sent to friends through MMS.

The 3G alone make the LG 440G stand out from other Tracfone flip phones. This is a nice step up from models like the Motorola W376G or other older flip phones.

At $20 retail, and often on sale for less, this phone offers great value for the money, and can easily be used as a backup phone with minimal money spent.

Dislikes for the LG 440G

While this phone does have some valuable features, it is not a fancy phone. If you are looking for a phone that you will use for surfing the web often, you might want to consider a phone with a larger screen, like the LG 840G, or even the Samsung S390G. Both of these phones also come with Triple Minutes for Life and WiFi, which the LG 440G does not have.

If you plan to use your phone for more than just a backup phone, you may want to consider a Tracfone with Triple Minutes for Life, instead of the LG 440G, which only comes with Double Minutes for Life.

The LG 440G has an advertised 7-10 days on standby, which sounds pretty good, and compared to most smartphones these days (which seem to only last 2-3 days), it is pretty good. But compared to say, the Samsung S425G, which lasts 12.5 days on standby, 7-10 days isn't as good.

The LG 440G was initially advertised to come with WiFi, but it turns ot it does not have it.

Finally, this phone does not have a MicroSD card slot, meaning you can't expand the onboard memory, or add very much music/games to the phone. But not many people are planning to use this phone for more than calling and texting anyway.

Overview and Recommendation

Overall, the LG 440G is a good flip phone from Tracfone. The 3G and low price are huge bonus features which give this phone a lot of usefulness.

However, unless you prefer a flip phone style, you may find other phone from Tracfone more appealing with larger screens, and full QWERTY keyboards. Visit our Cell Phone Reviews page to see some of the other options available.

But one of the biggest selling points for us on this phone is the low price. The LG 440G retails for $20 in most stores, but can often be found for much less, even $10 on Amazon!

This low price combined with the useful features makes LG 440G a superb value. For consumers interested in a good value for the money, and a flip style phone, this is a great buy.

View the LG 440G on Amazon to see if you can get it on sale for only $10!

If you're looking for a Tracfone that offers a lot more features, take a look at our reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Centura, ZTE Valet, Huawei Glory and LG Optimus Dynamic. These phones are android powered devices that offer lots of features and still use Tracfone's prepaid service.

I purchased this phone 2.5 years for my daughter. She used the phone for around a year. We recharged it several times during this period. Prior to purchasing the phone/minutes I spoke for 15 minutes with a Tracfone rep to understand their service. I thought I got it, but I now realize I did NOT. Around a year ago I had to call and get more minutes so I could use the phone on a business trip. I again spoke with a Rep and recharged the phone. Now I need the phone again. It had 67 unused minutes. The rep said that I needed a new SIM card, but said nothing about minutes or days. When I called to get the new SIM card working I was told that I must purchase more days. NOW I understand how it works, but they would not credit my unused minutes or refund my money.
Do not use this Tracfone system unless you plan to use it as your main phone like my daughter did - you lose minutes and days IF you fail to use either. The supervisor kept telling me the same thing over and over rather than giving me REAL service help.

Yes, it is important to understand how something works, before actually using it. After a certain period of time, tracfone cell phones expire unless they are used. It is done for a variety of reasons.

Using the tracfone value plan is a good way to automatically get minutes and service days every month, for a low price.

I've been using my tracfone for the past 5 years and I find it great, I buy the 1 year annual plan and get double minuets, (800) and because I also have a landline at home my air time contract lasts me the whole year before I have to renew again and often I have unused minuets left that gets transferred to my new next years contract. You do have to understand how contracts work before you sign up for something.

TracfoneReviewer Team said...

Great advice, and don't forget to use a promo code with your airtime refill, you can get as much as 250 free minutes with the 400 minute card. View a list of promo codes by clicking the 'tracfone promo codes' link above in the navigation bar.

I just purchased the LG 440G and can't find the headphone jack. I don't understand how they can offer MP3 without a jack to use it. Any thoughts?

Jen said...

Good question. I just bought this phone, and I'd like to know too. Also, apparently there should be a MicroSD slot under the battery, but there is not. Can anyone tell me exactly what sort of cable I'm supposed to use for MP3, and where to get it? Tracfone's website is useless on this matter.

Thanks in advance.

TracfoneReviewer Team said...

I've been looking around and I can't find any info on that. Not sure why it doesn't have a headphone jack. very odd.

Yeah, this phone doesn't seem to come with all the features it should have. You might be able to transfer files via bluetooth or a usb cable.

How do I find a list of display icons, or alerts, and what they mean. Tracfone has not answered this for me. Mine is the LG 440g. Thanks

Can you transfer pictures to a laptop via the USB port? I bought the proper cable and hooked it up but the phones does not show up as a drive from which I can transfer pictures.

Me either. Makes me so mad. I can type other stuff into google and other website's, just can't type email or password into facebook. Please someone help with this issue

I noticed the phone time is deducted in the increment of minues, NOT seconds! So, if I make a phone call for 25 seconds, I will be charged for one minute! This is cheating. I am disappointed in TracFone.

You can only transfer files using Bluetooth. Use USB bluetooth adapters on your PCs.

As far as I have been able to find out, this is true for ALL prepaid cellphone service providers, not just TracFone.

I like this phone, except the browser doesn't work. Tracfone told me that my providers ATT/Cingular does not provide data capabilities. Even though it comes with 3 or 4 G . I can't get an answer as to how I can get my browser feature to work. They should tell you it's not going to work before you buy it.

I'm having problems getting calls at all. Missing calls all the time. they seem to "catch up" two hours later. Using straightalk and NEVER had any problems not getting calls. Had to take out battery and put back in to get calls today. Any ideas on this?

LG440G does have a working browser and email. I own this phone. I have been a Tracfone customer for several years and unfortunately have found that TF customer service is terrible. Keep calling them back until you get someone who knows what they are talking about or insist on talking with a supervisor. They have at least three levels of tech service; you need to get past level 1. Don't call them from your TF. Use Skype or another non-metered phone. They take forever to do even the most simple transaction.

I just bought this. I was also disappointed to see I was charged for a minute for test call. I'm also disappointed about the VOLUME. I have it up to 7 and can barely hear the person on the other end. My old Tracfone had a speaker and I would have it turned on so I could get more volume out of the call. No way to fix this???

Anonymous said...

I just bought this phone from Tracfone for $19.99 with free shipping off their site. My only complaint so far is the VOLUME. I can't hear well on it. Anyway to get it above the max?

My husband has the same problem every time i call tech support they tell me its not a problem with the phone its a problem on facebook and to wait a few hours and try again!!! This answer and this phone are getting on my last nerve!! can anyone help fix this??

My browser will not connect on this phone, no matter how many times I have called tech support. I'm very frustrated wit it. The only thing it is good for is text and speak. If you are thinking of buying this phone and want to do more than that, don't buy it.

With all the BS, is the 440G such a deal? How does the Federal Trade Commission feel about so many LG 440G promoted features (like microSD slot, 'Net software and WiFi) missing from the finished goods? Does anyone recall LG or Tracfone recalling them?

I kept my landline and bought this cell phone, but for some reason it does not ring with local or international calls. Now I have to take a trip and wonder if this thing will work, especially if they call me from the airline for any reason.

Unknown said...

It's a great little entry level cell phone for a latch key kid as they said at walmart or one who just uses it for occasional calls. Works perfect for my usage. Tip: make sure it's not stuck on voice command or you won't recieve calls! Get that turned off and you're good to go. If you use a lot of talk time, like 400 minutes a month there's better plans around, but if not, this double the minutes phone will serve you well. Enjoy. :-)

The email on this phone, if you're using Gmail at least, when you delete messages you've retrieved, will delete messages FROM THE SERVER, not just from the phone. It does not offer an option to choose. My other phone, Samsung S425g, always asks, delete from phone? or delete from phone and server? This is a big disadvantage in my view.
Also, it will download messages from all of the folders in your Gmail, not just the Inbox, unless you change the settings in your Gmail account about "hide/show in IMAP4" for the other folders.
Otherwise the phone works OK.

Go Menu -> Tools -> Voice Recorder. Hit "Record" when the song starts (keep the phone very close to the speaker!), and keep it on as long as you want it to play, then hit "Stop". It will save the file as "Audio-xx.amr" (where 'xx' is a 2-digit automatically-assigned number starting at 00) in the Audio folder (found under Menu -> My Folder -> Audio).
To set the song for your ringtone, go Menu -> Settings -> Audio & Ringtones -> Ringtone -> Sounds, and the file you just created ("Audio-00.amr", for example) will be at the top. Select that, hit "Set", and you're good to go.
If you want the song for specific callers in your address book, go Menu -> Contacts -> Contact List, select the caller, go Options -> Edit, and in the caller profile scroll down to Ringtone. Hit "List", and it will open your Audio file, where you can select the song. Unfortunately, if you want to have the same song for multiple callers and don't want to do this for all of them, you will have to assign them to a Group, and then make the song the Group ringtone. Fussy, I know.

We've bought TWO Bluetooth headsets for our LG440G phones, one Jabra and one Plantronics. The phone will not recognize EITHER of them! Is there any headset that's GUARANTEED to be recognized by the phone? The local phone store won't let us try them out before we buy them, and they're getting tired of us returning headsets!

I found out how to e-mail myself a picture, but the Video won't do. The file size too large. How do you e-mail a Video (3gp file) from Album or download Video from Album to computer? What kind of Bluetooth Device works with this phone? LG 440?

Anonymous said...

Thank God I kept my land line and will never get rid of it. I pay $13/month, plus, my phone has an answering device, plus, I have an e-mail address, put together that's more than enough for people to get in touch with me. I had an older model Tracfone and decided to replace it with the LG440 which has been nothing but trouble. The main complaint is that it does NOT ring, therefore, people leave me messages, if I used the Tracfone to call back to hear my messages I would run out of minutes in no time so I check my messages from my land line. I'm waiting to run out of minutes and discard this useless piece of garbage. I called cust. service and an Indian who can barely speak English, like most of them, was unable to help me, so I hung up. Another time I was transferred to the Philippines and again the cust. service person was unable to communicate properly in English, and the last time I was transferred to a guy in El Salvador. I will not use minutes on people who cannot communicate properly. Forget about making international calls because the receiver will NOT hear you, or you will get disconnected.

Anonymous said...

I've had no problems with Tracfone service. You need to read the service agreement thoroughly to know what you get and don't get. For instance: you don't get roaming (using another carrier's cell tower) with a smart phone. You also get a more detailed user manual for your phone on Tracfone's website. I've set up two new phones using their website with no problems. On one I had my number ported from another carrier. It took less than one hour. The other one I activated with a new number and it took less than 20 minutes. I've spoken on the phone with customer service a few times and had good service. One spoke good English and the other used broken English but I could understand him.
Another tip with Tracfone is don't let your time or minutes run out! You stand to loose your number that way. As long as you keep them up your minutes carry over to the next purchase.
I think Tracfone is a great deal for me. Using a non smart CDMA phone I get a great signal just about everywhere I go. I'm using the LG 236c. Do your research before you buy!

There's no way that I have found to turn it off as for some reason it's linked to the main volume. A better question might be why does it constantly alert you that the battery is low (using up more battery life) instead of just when you open the phone? This is very, VERY annoying.

These inexpensive Tracfone's has been great for me for five or six years, but I am getting tired of inputting the growing phone directory. What should I look for in a phone to be able to back-up my phone book and load it into a new phone, without having to load 50 names and phone numbers manually? It is ridiculous that this phone has room for 1000 phone numbers, but they need to be entered manually through a 12 button keypad, and if anything happens to this phone, this excruciating procedure will need to be carried out for the new phone!

I LOVE MY phone, never had any problems I lost 1 phone called to get phone working and to deactivate my old one they asked me how much time I had on it and they added the minutes to the new one. When they said you needed a new sim card you should of asked what about my minutes then.

Anonymous said...

New LG phone - sometimes I do not receive the call but voice message is posted or sometimes it is 2 hours before the voice message is posted.
Samsung phone - Even though it is 5 years old, it receives calls and reports voice messages in real-time - no delay.
Both my cells have Tracfone pre-paid minutes.
My previous LG started to take 2 days to report a voice message - reason why I bought a new cell. The new LG worked well until I dropped it a few times.
The Samsung has been dropped many many times and does not have a receive/report issue - BUT - it has a volume problem - unless the environment is quiet - it can be difficult to understand what the other person is saying to me.

In the features profile for this LG 440g phone (with Tracfone service) it states the phone has "standby time up to 7-10 days." What does this "standby time" mean? The features profile also states a charge for the phone is good for 3.52 hours, so I don't think standby time has anything to do with that, or does it?

Related to charging, I am also unable to find anything in the LG 440g manufacturer's manual about a battery meter, to see how much is left of the charge on the phone. With my previous Tracfone one could access the battery meter from within the menus.

Also, a previous Tracfone (Motorola W376g) I had included call waiting. But this LG 440g doesn't seem to have call waiting. Does anyone reading this know if the LG 440g phone does include call waiting?

Lastly, how does one turn on the speaker phone feature, and also activate the so-called "voice dialing" feature the LG 440g also supposedly includes?

Thank you.

When the time and date don't adjust for daylight savings time, I just power down the phone, and the time and date usually adjust themselves automatically once the phone is turned back on. Hope this helps.

How do you program 911? Got it for my kid and it says 911 is an invalid number.
This is why I bought it.
Please advise.

I just received my LG441G. Where can I get an owners manual? I am having a hard time setting it to ring and vibrate. Instead, I get a voice telling me what number is calling. I liked my slide phone better. Probably because I know how to use it. Thanks for any informations!

I have a new symbol that has begun popping up here and now in my text inbox and outbox. It's of the open envelope that always appears but now it has a little square to the right hand side of the envelope and a little yellow circle in the square. Could anyone tell me what this means?

Google "LG441G Manual". You can download the manual.

Confirm on the pwr-down/pwr-up.. Mine didn't change overnight either... (and yesterday was Fall-Back.) Had to manually change the one on my father's phone (not Tracphone, through Consumer Cellular, their replacement 3G free phone, similar design.)

so we had to put our dog to sleep yesterday and my husband took many pictures of him this past week on his lg 441g. How do we transfer these pictures ANYWHERE, to email or computer so that we have these to treasure our dear family member. Has anyone successfully transfered pictures or video other to any other computer or phone???? DESPERATE!!!!

@Kasey: I've transferred videos and photos many times. You need topuchase a USB Bluetooth adapter for your PC. Follow the directions to install the drivers, then connect your PC and phone together. Once that is accomplished, go to the file on your phone that you want to transfer and hit Options. From there, choose Send... Then choose Via Bluetooth. It will then give you a list of all connected devices. Choose your computer and a few seconds later it should arrive on your computer for filing. Good luck.

Turn your bluetooth on in your phone. Get a bluetooth dongle for transfering files. Plug dongle into Pc or laptop. Select your photo on phone and hit send file. It will then show up in your computer. I create a folder called camera phone photos and send my transfers there.
