Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop Tracfone - Specs and Buying Guide

The Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop (A564C) Released for Tracfone

We are sharing details and specs below about the Alcatel A564C touchscreen smartphone newly released for use with Tracfone Wireless. TracfoneReviewer will continue to update this post as more information is available.

See links at the end of the post for buying options from Amazon and eBay!

The Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop has a really long name, and also a really large screen, the largest for a Tracfone device yet, at 5". This phone was released by Tracfone rather quickly, along with the LG Ultimate 2.

Tracfone is moving a little faster at adding new Android smartphones to their lineup that already includes several other options. But until now they were lacking a smartphone with a larger screen size, and the Alcatel Onetouch (and LG Ultimate 2) appears to fill that void.

The previous screen size options were the LG Optimus Fuel with a 3.5" touchscreen, and the LG Optimus Dynamic II at 3.8", among others.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Style, with a 4" touchscreen, and the Moto E, with 4.3" touchscreen, are both expected to be released in the near future, but have been overtaken before even being released. The LG Ultimate 2, which was released at the same time as the Icon Pop, has a 4.5" screen, and shares many similar features and specs.

In case you're wondering (like we were), here is the breakdown of why the name is so long. Alcatel is the company name, Onetouch is the name of the line of phones, and Icon Pop ( or sometimes POP Icon) is the name of this phone. There are a few other Alcatel Onetouch phones, like the Pop Mega, and Pop Star, but Tracfone isn't adding them to their selection. Tracfone then classifies this as the A564C, with 'C' denoting that it uses CDMA technology.

Let's look at what you can expect from the Alcatel Icon Pop.

What to Expect from the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on Tracfone

First off, the Icon Pop will be used on Verizon CDMA 3G service through Tracfone prepaid. This is the same as Tracfone's other Smartphone offerings at this time.

It will have Triple Minutes for Life, and minutes will be separated into Talk, Text and Data. For more info on this, read our post, How Minutes Work on Tracfone Android Phones.

The 5" touchscreen is obviously the most noticeable feature on the Alcatel A564C, but there are several other features that are very exciting for Tracfone users who are looking for an upgrade on their current phones.

Time to take a closer look at the Icon Pop features and specs.

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop Features and Specs

We will cover the main features for the A564C, followed by the technical specifications below.

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop and 5" screen
A number of the features and specs listed above for the Alcatel Ontouch Icon Pop are improvements over Tracfone's older smartphones, and similar to the Moto E and LG Ultimate 2. Let's take a closer look.

One of the big features is the processor and RAM on the Icon pop. With a quad core and 1 GB, it should be able to keep up with your needs. The LG Ultimate 2 and Moto E each have 1 GB of RAM and 1.2 Ghz processors, but they are only dual core. Other Android phones like the ZTE Valet and LG Optimus Dyamic II are single core with 512 MB RAM.

Another big feature on the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop is the camera. It has a 5MP rear camera plus a 0.3MP front camera. And after looking through sources, it appears to have autofocus.

The Ultimate 2 also has a 5MP camera with autofocus, and 1.3MP front camera. But the Moto E only has a 5MP rear camera and no autofocus.

Lastly, the 5" screen is a nice feature, and a bit bigger than the other smartphones from Tracfone at this time as we mentioned above. Some sources indicate that it has a resolution of 854 x 480 while we found others saying 960 x 540.

Our Thoughts on the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop

This phone brings some great new features to the table with a 5" screen and quad core processor. While this phone is still at the low end of the smartphone market, it is ahead of many of Tracfone's other devices.

Each new phone that Tracfone releases pushes the list of features further and further into what other carriers are using. Tracfone is still behind the curve, but they are trying to catch up. It is unlikely they will ever sell top of the line phones with their prepaid service, but at least users can get some newer tech.

The Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop is a a great looking phone with a nice large screen, but is it better than the Moto E and LG Ultimate 2? Spec-wise, it does have more processing cores, and a larger screen, but each user must choose what is important to themselves when selecting a phone. Not everyone, for example, wants a 5" screen.

At $150 from the Tracfone website, the Alcatel Icon Pop is the most expensive Tracfone yet. We  have just found the Alcatel on Amazon, as well as eBay with several attractive minutes bundles, and at a slightly discounted price:

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop available on Amazozn and eBay with Minutes options:

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on Amazon for $129 (plus $5 shipping)

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on eBay for $119

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop with 600 Minutes on eBay for $169

These are some pretty decent deals if you're looking to buy the phone along with minutes. Last check the Alcatel was in and out of stock on Tracfone's site. So if you are looking for this phone, you might want to move fast!

We will also be doing a full review of the Alcatel smartphone in the near future.

The Alcatel will be great for those looking for a big phone, and looking to impress with a large screen. Although these days, 6" screens or bigger seems to be necessary.

Let us know what you're thinking about this phone, and if you have any questions about it.

Here is the Alcatel ontouch interactive tutorial to see how the phone works.

If you're hunting for a new phone, consider the Tracfone BYOP Phone List page where we have lots of information on bringing your own phone to Tracfone, including the Moto G and iPhone 4S!

Alcatel? never heard of them will the quality be as good as my Samsung querty (TracFone)..I do not want one that can bend like the I-phone 6.

Wow...I had better visit this site more frequently. I missed this release and will read it more in depth when I get home tonight, along with the other new release. Thanks Peter!

So Alcatel is one of those up and coming cell phone manufacturers who's actually doing pretty well breaking into the budget market, but apparently this phone is essentially the same as the Alcatel One Touch Fierce 2, which hasn't gotten great reviews (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi8IFrrjCqI)

I wonder if Tracfone would consider partnering with Blu Products, which is somewhat similar to Alcatel in making budget smartphones, but has been making phones that seem to get some pretty decent reviews.

Where can I buy this phone with the tracfone carrier? It does not show up on the tracfone website.

What about protective cases? Does anyone know if Fierce 2 will fit this model, since nothings coming up on ebay / amazon for this phone yet.

I just bought this phone from the Tracfone web site.
So far I'm happy with it. It is pretty fast. The service is from Verizon. That's cool.
You are able to switch to a simple mode and get big icons. So far I find that feature useless. I have not been able to find a way to put the icons I want on the home screen.
Not much you can do on the simple mode. Just don't use it. Maybe there is a way. Still learning this home.

I was told by Tracfone directly that the Alcatel is not serviced by Verizon but by AT&T. For me that makes a huge difference. Could you some how verify that either you or Trafone is incorrect? I really wanted the Alcatel but cannot use AT&T. Will look forward to a reply. Thanks so much for this blog.

I have been using this phone for a few days now and I like it very much. When I enter my phone number on Carrierlookup.com it reports my phone as a Mobile Phone by Verizon. I live in Maine if that helps.

If I remember correctly, Alcatel has been around since the 1950s or '60s in Europe (France? Belgium?), and didn't they buy Lucent a few years ago? I am happy to see that Tracfone is venturing into true smartphone territory. I have used Tracfone for a long time and have been very happy with it, but of course as more of my clients get smartphones and use them for business I'm being bombarded with messages that I can't open without "retrieving" -- a huge pain in the erHem when you get slew of them within a couple minutes and then you can't tell them apart on your phone. I had feared my Tracfone days were coming to a close, but now it looks like I'll be able to keep going. Not crazy about the three way split of minutes, I doubt I'll use the web minutes much, but like the idea that I can possibly hook into to my home Wifi and text for free. Wish I had found your site long ago, useful info! Cheers, Karen N.

TF should start offering 4g phones by next year.. that should be sufficient to get me to upgrade the dynamic 2...

Anonymous said...

A564C is the Tracfone model number. Tracfone adds a "C" to all its CDMA phones it offers. AT&T Wireless carrier usage would require a Tracfone model ending in "G". The modulation technology AT&T Wireless uses, i.e., GSM

I have purchased both a case and screen protectors from Amazon for the One Touch Fierce 2 and they both fit this phone perfectly.

Anonymous said...

I got mine at a local Walmart phone shop yesterday and we have a plan with Verizon.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully Amazon will list it soon at a discount to the $149 price at the Tracfone website. Looks like it would be a decent upgrade to the ZTE Valet I've had for about a year.

I just got the a564c. I have spent over 10 hours picking through all the preloaded Apps. I am more then happy with this phone and its paformance. The compas feature is great and spot on (+/- a 5-10 meters messured beside a stand alone GPS). The OS and Ouad cpu makes talking (via speaker phone) and looking up driving directions (as well as a few other of the Apps) a breeze. There was no visable lag time. And the added 32g sd card makes storage of music, files, videos, and more downloadable Aps simply roomy enough to handle all your needs.
Over all I give the a564c 4 out of 5 star rating. I hope others will take a closer look at this phone. The price tag @ $149 a good deal for a Android phone

Anonymous said...

the pop icon is a CDMA phone. AT&T uses the GMS technology. so no it wont work with AT&T.

Anonymous said...

Did you guys ever get a case for it I am having problems to fine one

Unknown said...

I agree - the iPhones have a tendency to catch on fire also (check YouTube for details on those stories. I wonder if the weak point below the volume rocker-switch is a contributory factor. I ended up getting the LG Optimus Dynamic 2 (LG 39c) on Amazon. Does everything I want a Smartphone to do plus fits easily in your pocket. Many of these phones are getting to look and feel like a tablet.

the alcatel phone videos stutters every 4-5 seconds internet and media video as well. anybody else notice this.

Anonymous said...

id send it back

Anonymous said...

I have noticed the same thing on mine. The stutter is not bad, but it is noticeable. It does it with videos on the sd card, and on youtube but not as bad. Even on simple games like solitaire and angry birds the video is not as smooth as it should be on a phone with these specifications. I have not decided if it is a deal breaker or not, as the phone does everything else very well. Phone reception, texting and web surfing are great and very fast. This one's a tough call.

Anonymous said...

How do you transfer contacts and calender content to this phone from another Tracfone?

Anonymous said...

Does the video record in 720p?

Anonymous said...

Yes

Anonymous said...

Save the contacts on a micro SD card from another phone or a PC, then install the card into the new phone. Import the contacts into the new phone.

I must have gotten a lemon, because my A564C restarted every few minutes whenever the screen was locked (standby mode), and often required a hard reset to return it to a usable state. It worked fine once it was successfully booted up and swiped on, but whenever it reverted to standby the phone was often unusable. I tried restoring it to factory defaults several times, and TracFone would resend the activation data, without any improvement. I'm currently in the process of exchanging my phone for another of the same model. Hopefully the next one will work better. I'm glad to hear that other owners are not experiencing the same symptoms.

Thanks for the information. I would add that the built-in 4GB is "2 GB usable." My current Huawei Glory Tracfone has only a 3.5" screen and 0.630 GB free internal memory and even when I move everything possible to my SD Card I can't get half the apps I want on it. Tripling the space should solve my problem and the larger screen will help me type, etc. better.
Yes, there are complaints that there's jittery video, hard to see the matte-screen outside in sunshine, camera's not great, etc. but it looks like this is the only 5" screen that Tracfone will have for a while, so I just ordered one.

Anonymous said...

It looks like Tracfone pulled the Alcatel A564C from their lineup. I wonder what's up? Out of stock or no longer going to use it? hummmm

Wow! That's weird: they shipped mine on Friday -the day I ordered it- and now (Sunday, 11/9 AM) it's not on the list on Tracfone's "Buy Phones" page when I input my zip code - which is where I found it Friday to order it. I think it must be a glitch or temporary out of stock thing:
I ordered mine from Tracfone on Nov. 7 (Fri.) and with "free overnight delivery" and
I entered FRIEND1 in the special code slot on checkout and got $5 off - I read about FRIEND1 on some blog page while researching this phone.

I got this email from Tracfone on Nov. 7:
"Your order has been shipped. Please note that signature is required upon delivery of your order. If you would like to track your order please click on the tracking number below...Alcatel onetouch® Pop ICON™ Android™ + 450 Min Card..."

When I click on the Fedex Tracking No. it says it arrived at my hometown (Baltimore) sorting facility Sun. AM and delivery is expected tomorrow (Monday). This is my 4th Tracfone and I'll go through the transfer of phone number and minutes/messages/3G tomorrow from my current Huawei Glory 3.5" Tracfone. If I run into problems, I'll post it here.

I don't think they'd have shipped it Fri. if they were discontinuing it Sat. so it's extremely likely to be listed again soon - unless, with my luck - an improved model will replace it. If so, I might be wise to wait before opening the package.
Hmmm?
Nah, I'm too impatient!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, it was there last week. I was going to order one today and it was gone. Found one on Ebgay but it was GMS not CDMA so it can't be used on Tracfone "BYOP" :-(

Anonymous said...

to anyone who has the alcatel I just bought it . you can switch the simple mode off and then you can add all icons to your home screen

Unknown said...

Wow. How smart is that? Especially with all the competition out there.

Anonymous said...

I also noticed that the Alcatel OneTouch Pop Icon wasn't on their website this week. Along with the LG Ultimate 2. I was very disappointed and hope Tracfone will put the phones back on their website.

To transfer your contacts, first save the contacts as a vcf file - I used the free "Super Backup : SMS & Contacts" from the Google Store to create it in the internal memory in a folder called "SmsContactsBackup" on my old phone, connected to my laptop by USB, then backed up my old phone's information.

I moved my SD Card into my new phone, erased and reformatted it, then connected the new phone to the laptop and put movies, pics, etc. - including the vcf file on the SD Card.

The "Contacts" or "People" folder is accessible throw the phone icon. On the dialing page there are three vertical dots on the lower right. Press them and a menu including "Contacts" appears. Press "Contact and a menu should come up asking you if you want to import contacts. If you stuck the vcf file on your SD Card, choose the choice that imports from within the phone and it will find the vcf file and transfer your contacts.

Note that some of the "contact" tutorials on the Tracfone site only apply to the Simple Mode. I thought I had a badly-programed phone when I couldn't swipe the main screen to the right and see a "Contacts" bar because I'm not using Simple Mode! The "Setup Wizard" makes it easy to change modes if you desire.

Sorry, I haven't figured out the calendar yet and I use Jorte anyway: I just got the phone today and it's now the wee hours of the morning and I've just got everything as I want it with my contacts transferred and a lot of apps installed.

I should add that some reviews talk about the phone being dim. It arrives with the brightness set low and pressing the lower right button, settings, scrolling down to display correcting it to you preference and it's fine.

For one day I'm not overly impressed nor disappointed by the 800+ x 400+ resolution and the phone hass what I most want: a large screen and 2.06 GB of usable internal memory, allowing me to put on a lot more apps than when I had 630 MB with the Huawei Glory 3.5" phone.

I see early Tues. AM the Alcatel 5" phone is still not listed on the Tracfone site. I'm amazed they don't mention that it (surely) will be available in the future. I ordered mine Friday evening and must have just got in under the wire.

Still waiting for Alcatel onetouch Pop ICON A564C to show up again. Toss up between it and waiting to see if Moto E or G shows up this season. Would love to have a phone on Android 5 Lollipop same as will be on my Nexus 7.

The_Mick said...

The 854 x 480 pixel listing for this phone is definitely correct - it's not 960 x 540.
I have some movie videos I had used Pinnacle Studio movie software to convert and crop to 320 x 240 pixels for an old cellphone and put them on the Tracfone Alcatel A564C I received Monday. I used the free app "MX Player" to play it and when, holding it in "landscape" position, I expanded the video to fill the screen vertically it said around "200%." 200% of 240 pixels is 480. When I expanded it to fill the screen horizontally it said around "267% and 267% of 320 is 848 pixels. I repeated the exercise and each time those %ages were within a few of those I listed.

Today I received a replacement phone of the same model, about a week and a half after sending the original phone in by prepaid FedEx. TracFone paid for all shipping since I originally ordered from them. They also ported the phone number and remaining minutes over before I received the new phone, so all I had to do was activate it using *22890 from the call screen. This one works! No more random restarts. I'm glad that I stuck with this model. So far, so good.

Btw, the video recorder records 720p only if you set the video quality to high (default). It lacks the image stabilization of a camcorder, but otherwise it's okay. I like the camera flash options, which includes auto, 'flash off', or 'flash on' modes. The resolution is 2560 x 1440 pixels.

I have LG 500G, Is it possible to port my number to this phone and transfer the minutes?

Does the Alcatel Pop FM player have a built in (tuner), or is it an app that requires WIFI to use?

Anonymous said...

It does have a built in FM radio, which requires connection of a headset or ear buds to the mini phone jack at the top of the phone for the antenna. No WiFi is required. You can manually save favorite FM stations or use the built in autoscan function. The only downside to this radio is that it sounds to me like mono (no stereo), even on strong stations. I could be wrong, but that's my impression.

Available for $99.99 from Tracfone DIRECTLY. I have been hitting TF's website every day or so to see what new phones might hit and when others (Ultimate 2 etc.) might come available again. TODAY I see the onetouch Pop ICON available at this lowered price. I even added it to my CART to make sure it wasn't a tech error. I have not bought it because I am still consider my next move, but thought it was worth sharing with my fell watchers here. Happy Hunting!!

99.99 plus free shipping on tracfone site currently

If you've already purchased the a564c for a higher price, TracFone does not offer a price protection credit. However you can return the original phone (you pay return shipping) for a refund, and then purchase a new phone for the lower price. In my case, the savings is about $50, minus the return shipping cost. The 'FRIEND1' promo code still works for an additional $5 savings, the last time I checked.

Just purchased, what do you guys mean by 'jittery' video?

Unknown said...

Ya i just purchased myself and it's coming this monday. I got worry when i found out ppl saying it have jittery video on youtube and even video you have on your SD card. I guess i'll test this out myself on monday. The thing about Android phones sometime it's not a phone you take out of the box and use. Sometime you have to play with the setting and find all the tips to fix small issue.

11/23/14 - Just bought 2 pop icons for $99 each on the Tracfone web page - and used promo code to get $5 off each fone - Free overnight shipping till 12/19/14. Price just a few weeks ago was $149 per fone - so glad I waited.

I got the onetouch for my wife to replace her nokia 1100 which was experiencing battery problems after 6 years. She LOVES the simple mode. It limits what she can do but she is very happy with the reception and voice quality. She likes big icons and hates complexity. It was easy to find a case and screen protector for it at the local mall. Im going to wait for a belt clip carrier before I make the leap and ditch my flip phone/ipod combo.

Unknown said...

Love this phone there is a jittery in video and games but overall it's awesome. There is a delay in moving around your phone sometimes you can fix this by

"By default, animations are disabled on the Alcatel. This may make the phone seem choppy to some people, so to re-enable them, go to About Phone and click on Build 7 times. This will enable Developer Options. Then go into Developer Options in the settings and change the animation and Window scales to 1.0x, each. The phone will seem so much smoother after this." Thanks Craig M. from amazon review.

Overall i love the screen size and youtube sound awesome yes there is a small jittery in video like other have said but overall not too bad. Best part for me is how nice the sound the back facing cam does take
good pic but the front facing cam you need good light to take a good pic. But it's not that bad
Overall if you looking for a big size screen with front and back cam and auto focus on the back one and
flash then i get this phone. If that not something you care too much about then get the moto E
should be even better phone.

-Sorry grammar not too good :(-

I've been using TracFone phones for years. I purchased this phone from the TracFone site Monday night and received it Wednesday. TracFone was selling the phone for $99.99. I used the FRIEND1 promo code and lowered the price to $94.99. They were also offering FREE FedEx overnight shipping, usually $14.99. So, now that I've had a day to play around with this phone, I am quite amazed. It's quite responsive, looks great and sounds quite well. Even the speaker on the back sounds decent. I know it's early yet, but I'm quite happy with the Alcatel onetouch Pop Icon from TracFone. It's a really nice phone.

What kind of screen do they use? Gorilla Glass?

Anonymous said...

I ordered this phone from Tracfone's web site on 11/24/14 for $99.99, with free overnight shipping. It was shipped on 11/25/14 and I received it on 11/26/14. I looked again today and this phone is not on their web site in my zip code...97302, Salem, Oregon...nor is it available in my mom's zip code...66212, Overland Park, Kansas.

Sometimes, a phone will be available in one zip code or the other, but not both. Obviously, one has to check frequently, because they change the phones and the prices in the blink of an eye. It's almost like shopping for airline tickets.

So far, I'm pretty pleased with this phone. Youtube videos are not jumpy at all for me. The main reason I switched to this phone was for the 5 inch screen. I was using the LG Optimus Dynamic II and getting quite frustrated with the on-screen keyboard having such tiny keys. I was spending a lot of time correcting mistakes. So, I'm much happier with the Alcatel's keyboard.

I have noticed that on some phone calls I can't hear the other person as well as I'd like to. But, I think this might be a matter of getting used to how big the phone is in my hand and how close I'm holding it to my ear and mouth at the same time.

I keep accidentally touching the keys to my cheek in an effort to get the microphone closer to my face. I need to get used to the idea that the microphone will pick up my voice from a little farther distance than I'm used to with my previous, smaller phones.

I don't believe the screen is Gorilla Glass. I think I read somewhere else that it's plastic, which is why it can be offered for such a low price.

I got the Icon pop from the tracfone website, used the Friend1 promo code and got the free shipping. I love it so far. I am giving my ZTE Valet to my daughter. It was getting so buggy, but she can use it for fun. Does anyone know how(if) you can change the home screen icons? Seems like you should be able to have what you use most on the home screen.

Anonymous said...

Mine does this. Have noticed short split second breaks when playing videos. Unlike buffering, these happen with regularity and about every 5-6 seconds during play. They are extremely brief affecting the video only, but are quite noticble and extremely annoying. Happens with YouTube vids and also with my purchased movies on Google Play.

Unsure whether my phone is defective or does this occur with all Alcatel One Touch Icon Pop A564C phones.

Any imput appreciated ... Thanks.

Unknown said...

To move the icon you hold down on the icon you want to move. If you want to remove it all together when holding down there a Trash Cans icon on the top. You can move icon to left or right of your hold screen by holding down and then moving it too the right or left.

It's a little weird sometime moving icon but once you get use too it. You have no problem moving thing around. I myself keep what i use the most on my main home screen. my right home screen i have save homepage website and to my left home screen i have my games. Which leave me with two free home screen that i may never use.

Does anyone know how to track your minutes on this phone? I downloaded the Tracfone My Account app and it does not work.,

Unknown said...

https://www.tracfone.com/direct/CheckBalance :) it would text you all the information. It does not cost you any text points if you do it.

Unknown said...

For the app to give results, you need to be logged into wifi or have data enabled, then tap the app's "Update" button as the app does not give a running record of your account. Each update requires a specific request by you. Good luck.

Just got this phone on Ebay with 1200 minutes and text and data for 129.99.

I bought it from Tracfone for $100 plus using the Friend1 promo code got it for $95 plus Tax.
Now the best part, I was ready to activate by phone until on another site people were saying doing it online gives you more days to your service. YES, added over a year in days to my service for free!!!

Love the phone!!!! But I have two beefs with it. 1 is the screen is 2 finger touch only so no games like magic piano. 2 is that this phone along with android 4.4 security does not alow apps to install or move data to SD card so the SD card is personal data only... Aka photos vids and music. So the apps you can install on internal memory is limited at only 2gb usable... Other then that the phones nice... Just an FYI for you all.

Yes I also just got the ebay deal. Very happy so far except can't figure out how to turn off the music player. Anyone ?

I just purchased this phone at Kroger. I got it for $ 49.99 with my Kroger Shoppers Card. It is a very nice phone and it is from Net10. I had to buy it at $ 49.99 what a deal !! So you may want to check out Kroger if you want a great price on this phone. It is not available at every Kroger.

July 2014 bought HSN LG Optimus II with a year's activation 1,200 mins, 1,200 texts and 1,200 MB of data - similar deal. Have a home phone. Do all I wish on this phone using Wifi with free texting/calling Apps like Google Hangouts or Viber except when no Wifi. Have only used 4 voice minutes, 4 texts and 108 mb of data from July to December 2014.

VERY happy with the HSN deal. My Optimus Dynamic II's Single core 1,000 ghz processor / 512K ram not enough to use many apps. Phone frequently lags or freezes. Remove apps & it's OK. I'll likely be getting the Alcatel soon.

I purchased both the Alcatel-One Touch Pop Icon and the LG Ultimate 2 Tracfones and here is my take. They are both really nice phones. The main drawback of the Alcatel is the small internal storage of 2GB. You cannot put very many apps on this phone. Also there is some type of firmware on this phone that prevents you from moving apps to your SD card like you can with most other phones including the LG Ultimate 2. Also to wake this phone up from sleep mode you must press the side power button. On the LG you just tap the home button on the lower front. This home button also turns from red to green when the battery is charged. No way to tell with the Alcatel unless you turn the phone on. Also on the Alcatel there is no Contacts button to find your contacts. You must press the phone buuton to get to your contacts list. The speakers on the Alcatel are much better than the LG and the screen is larger than the LG. The viewing angles are better on the LG and the colors are a little brighter. The Alcatel screen shows some distortion when held in landscape mode but is very sharp in portrait mode. Overall they are both nice phones I prefer the LG mainly that I can put a lot more apps on this phone with its 5GB internal storage compared to 2GB for the Alcatel. The cameras are very similar with adequate lighting you can get some nice shots. Phone voice quality seems the same. Navigating the screens on these phones is a little different on each phone even though it is the same Android version, but both are easy to follow.

Thanks! I had tried all yesterday with several "move to SD" apps and could never get any to work. I eventually came across the issue that some Android OS phones won't let apps be moved. Are you or is anyone familiar with any Tracfone smartphone that allows apps to be moved to the SD card? If not, the new blog here of apps that Tracfone users may want should remove the suggestion to install the AppMgrIII app.

Anonymous said...

I have the Alcatel Pop Icon, power down the phone, remove battery, insert 32gb micro sd card, replace battery and cover, power up. Now open settings, storage, select SD card as the Default Write Disk. Now your phone has 32gb Main memory no need to move apps,

oOtenorsaxOo said...

Does it have to be through a phone service such as Verizon? Can't I just use it as a small, older version of tracfone? We are dropping our att plan and I want a tracfone that isn't crappy that I can use with justs minutes and not through a service. Is it possible with this phone?

TracfoneReviewer Team said...

This phone uses Verizon cell phone towers, meaning if Verizon service isn't good in your area, this phone won't work very well. But this phone is through Tracfone, so nothing you need to do with Verizon, or contracts etc. It is the same as the older Tracfone devices, except minutes are split into Talking/Texting/Data. You can still simply buy a prepaid minutes card and add it to the phone.

Anonymous said...

The default write disk only applies to pictures, screen caps, and videos you take with the phone itself. (possibly data exports from apps as well) Apps still install to phone storage only, this is a restriction put in place by Android KitKat. You have to root your phone in order to re-enable moving apps to the SD card and there isn't one available yet.

oOtenorsaxOo said...

So I can use it without a verizon contract completely?

TracfoneReviewer Team said...

exactly, you just go through Tracfone

How much do the SD cards cost?

pussmom212 said...

I simply use Bluetooth to move everything from one TRACFONE to another, have done it many times as I upgrade approximately 1x a year because both QVC and HSN offer great deals with high minutes cheaper than anywhere else. The minutes are always transferable to my new phone.
TRACFONE has discontinued a policy In used to take advantage of.I would buy the cheaper phones just for minutes but they stopped letting us do it without giving us prior notice.

I have this model but the issue I ran into is with the SD card. The phone recognizes it but there's no way to move files off the built in memory to the SD card. I've tried various SD card managers I've tried of the Play Store but of no avail. I was wondering if anyone here has run into this issue. If you have/had this issue how did you resolve it? I've checked a lot of places only to realize that it's an issue and everyone who has posted about it still does not have a fix. Thanks!

Sadly the Pop dows not come up as an Tracfone option in my service area (zip code). How can this be?

Katie L. said...

I won't have any problems with internal storage. My ZTE Valet has 1 GB storage available to user and I have downloaded lots of aps with no problems. This Pop Icon has twice that amount of storage!

Anonymous said...

I ordered one on ebay $129 with 1200 minutes times 3 included also free shipping

I discovered that my data (pics) could be migrated to SD and I can now install a few more apps. You'll find out that even having 2 Gigs, you do runout of space over time. It appears to suit my needs for now.

Anonymous said...

If you have pics and music on the phone how do you move it to the SD card?

Unknown said...

Check with a tracfone rep to make sure. This model did come up once but they must have run out of stock as it doesn't show for me anymore. I found mine on Amazon and it works fine in the Wash DC area even though it no longer shows up on the Tracfone site.

Katie L. said...

I have had my ZTE Valet Tracfone for over a year and I am no where near running out of internal space for my apps. I do not use my phone for photography. I doubt the Pop Icon will run out of space for me with it having twice the amount of storage of the ZTE Valet. I am just waiting for the price of the Pop Icon to go under $100. It is $119 now on ebay.

Unknown said...

The only thing you can do is remove some apps you are not going to use until someone figures a way around this problem. Some apps take a lot of memory. Like I said most modern smart phones have at least 5 gb internal storage. so this phone is a little small. Also most phones you can move some apps to your sd card (like the LG ultimate 2) with the same operating system. but this phone prevents this. You can move picts, music, etc to the sd card with no problem, just not the apps themselves.

Unknown said...

When I set the Storage default setting to "SD Card", the pics began saving to the card. They don't show in the storage area but I see them when I check using The file manager.

I'm pretty happy with my Pop Icon phone now. It's the best smartphone offered by Tracfone so far. I found a pretty good cover for it off Amazon. The Alcatel One Touch Fierce 2 covers fit perfectly to the pop icons dimensions if a search for the Pop Icon does not come up with anything.

I purchased an Alcatel Pop Icon phone for my wife at Christmas. So far we are happy with the phone except for one odd behavior. She can text to anyone/any other network within our own area code and the text goes through correctly. However, if she attempts to text our son who lives in another area code, the texts will sometimes go through correctly and sometimes go through garbled and sometimes not go through at all. Has anyone else noted this behavior? Is it caused by this phone or by Tracfone itself? Thanks for any info you have.

lordzables said...

Yeah but storeage is so cheap now and this Alcatel only put 2GB of storeage in this nice phone? What a joke, with all the cool apps and now that that you can't move apps to your sd card. They only give you 2gb of storeage? And most of that 2GB is already taking up by Google apps. This phone has tons of Google apps preinstalled and you can't get rid of them to mke more room. As cheap as memory is in this day and age, Alcatel should not make a phone without a min. of 16gb in it. 2gb? What a joke.

Unknown said...

I'm an owner and it's very frustrating. I had purchased an 8gb SD thinking I could do just that and found out that some data gets saved there and maybe not. If you're lucky a file manager might work. The file managers I've used don't do just that. I have to uninstall / reInstall apps , a juggling act to use certain ones when needed. The phone is great but I curse Androids OS,s move on limiting apps to just the built in memory. I know it's a security thing but ... they need to figure another way and fix this.

I think what you need to do is simply press the power button and volume down button for about 3-5 seconds. Tell me if it works.

Anonymous said...

Addendum: After working with Tracfone for several hours we jointly decided the phone itself was defective. Tracfone is replacing it free. Hopefully the new one works correctly. Tracfone was very helpful during this annoying experience.

Every time I take my Alcatel One touch out of my pocket it launches one of the applications I accidentally touched. How can I stop this?

Unknown said...

What I do is to press the power button as a quick press to blank out the screen before it goes in my pocket. This prevents anything from being launched accidently. Another quick press brings it back to an active screen. I hope that helps.

Anonymous said...

Alcatel one touch pop icon is a very good phone. But ony 2 GB Rom. If Tracfone offer 5.5 - 6 inch phone with biger Rom, that will be wonderful.

Anonymous said...

Your welcome!

Unknown said...

Does anyone know what the screen is made out of. Gorilla Glass or cheap plastic?
And if so is it the same as the LG Ultimate 2

The_Mick said...

Alcatel does make a 6" phone (review:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2476030,00.asp) the One Touch Pop Mega, that lists for $249.99.
It has the same ROM/RAM as the One Touch Pop Icon: 4GB (about 2 GB usable)/1 GB.
The problem with the ROM is that with Android 4.4 you can't store much of downloaded apps on the SD card like you could with earlier Android versions. This is said to be an anti-hacking protection. A minimum 32 GB should thus be included in the built-in ROM then - considering the cost of the memory is almost negligible compared to the cost of the phone.

Can you play radio apps such as Pandora or iHeart or Live365 for this phone?

lordzables said...

I got my Tracfone POP Icon from HSN for Christmes from my wife and it ran out of memory in Mid- January the very next month and because the Pop uses the new 4.4 Andriod OS, you can NOT move any AAPS or any of your Pictures that you take with this nice new phone over to the SD card, so you have this really fancy phone and ONLY 2GB of storage. What a joke. 2gb? that is nothing in todays world, why would anyone make anything with memory being so cheap, why would anyone make anything with onky 2gb. You can't do nothing once it fills up. you can per-load picture and music to the SD card but you CAN NOT move them from the phone over to the card. Do not buy any phone with out at least 16gbs of space, 32gb would do you better.

Anonymous said...

I recently got both the LG Ultimate 2 and Alcatel Onetouch Pop Icon, and the LG Ultimate 2 is much better than the Alcatel One Touch Pop Icon.

I like the screen size and the loud/clear speakers of the Alcatel, but there are two major flaws with that phone. Every Youtube video I've played studders/skips every 10 seconds (audio plays fine but video freezes for 1 sec). This also happens in some games I've tried (Real Racing 3 and Tengai) so it's not an internet connection problem, but a fault with the phone's hardware. It's the main issue that keeps me from wanting to use it. The other major drawback is that there is only about 2GB of usable storage space and you can't move apps to the microSD card. The front facing camera is blurrier than LG. There are also less customization options and features than the LG.

I ended up giving the Alcatel to my father since he is less experienced with phones, and it has the simple mode GUI and louder speakers. Then gave the LG to my mother and bought another LG for myself. We were both using the Samsung Galaxy Centura and this is a huge upgrade from that. Not saying that the Alcatel is bad (it is better than previous Tracfone phones), but the LG Ultimate 2 is better.

Unknown said...

I just got my one touch pop and when I take a picture and go to look at it it says no thumbnail... Why??: someone please help me!!!

Unknown said...

We are having problems assigning ring tones to contacts. Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be a problem with the phone? Is their something we are not checking or unchecking? We followed the steps in the manual. Please help.

Unknown said...

The following is what I did to assign a ringtone to a specific contact:

1. Select the green phone symbol on the lower left side of the phones screen
2. Find the specific contact that you have already set up in your address book to display it on the phones screen.
3. When you have the specific contact displayed on your screen, press the Menu symbol on the lower right of your screen. The symbol looks like a longer line with three short lines below it. This will display more options and the forth option listed will be- "Set Ringtone"
4. When you select "Ringtone", a list of ringtones will come up. Select the one you want to assign to this contact and select "Ok" at the bottom of this list. There will be a dot to the right side of the ringtone that needs to be selected.
5. Now this contact has its own ringtone when he/she calls you.

You can use the cable that you charge the phone with....just plug the USB end into your computer's USB and the other into the phone...you should see your phone on your desktop...you can then transfer your pics or whatever else you would want to do..also, on the phone you will have choices on what you would want to do...etc....charge phone copy pics.....hope this helps...ALSO....DROPBOX....download dropbox on your phone and computer...works like a charm....you have the option to turn it on or off...really good..

You can also send them to your computer via email or text on the phone.

@TracfoneReviewer -- TEMPERATURE SENSOR? I bought this smartphone -- my first smartphone ever, so I'm jazzed. Question: I'm interested in getting a thermometer/temperature app (not weather reports forecasts, etc) -- to be able to gauge ambient temperature wherever I am. BUT such an app, i.e. Smart Thermometer at Google Play clearly states:

"Please make sure your phone has a temperature sensor, otherwise this app can only show you temperatures from web services like any other weather app."

I found no link at the Alcatel site to submit a question, in this case to find out if this model does or does not have such a sensor. My guess it does not, but I just don' know.

Do you or anyone else know one way or another and where in Settings or otherwise to look for relevant info, stats?
Thanks.

I like the ALCATEL A564C, but it is deleted text message after two weeks, I do not what it to do that, anyone know how I can change a setting. The manual give instructions but I do not have the SMS default that it directs me to, ?????? Thanks for any help

Unknown said...

Tinkerbell: I researched this and it appears that if your text messages are self deleting after two weeks, it is likely that your settings are causing this behavior. Here is a setting you might try:

If you go to the Texting option, go into the multi-option setting. This is the key pad with the long line with three shorter lines below it. On the bottom edge of your screen, it is the right most key pad.

Select, Settings.

The next screen will have the Storage options described as, "Delete old messages as limits are reached." It is likely that the box is checked. Uncheck this setting.

This should stop the deletion of older messages. I'm not sure if this over time will max out your memory limits but for the time being it won't delete any messages.

Do you have an SD storage card and if so, have you defaulted your Storage settings to save your data to it?

Unknown said...

Tinker bell: (The info above may not help disregard for now- please try this instead.). I also discovered that under settings, I found that there is also the Text Message Limit setting. Mine is set to "19". This appears to be the default, I assume this as I have never changed mine since I got the phone. The means that when it reaches 19 messages, the 20th one will be deleted. So you will need to increase to a much higher number. I occasionally I find that I need to refer back to an old text for some info sent to me buts it's rare. Again, the phone will need to store all these extra messages so you will consume extra memory storage space and should use an SD card for all the extra data. I ran into this headache several times. Two gigs of main storage fills up fast after you load up on apps.

RichKat said...

lordzables is absolutely correct. This phone has some really nice specs and is blazing fast but the 2gb of space is a JOKE. And it's not so funny. You can put hardly anything on it without it saying storage is low. And those of you who keep saying put it on the sd card are not hearing the problem. The problem is APPS. This phone is SEVERELY limited in how many apps you can put on. A couple of BIG ones and a dozen small ones and you're full.

This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned in my life. I've had it for 2 1/2 months and will be replacing it. My latest dissatisfaction is that It won't hold a charge for more than 12 hours on standby, and God forbid I should make even a short phone call. I'm getting rid of this thing.

The_Mick said...

I wouldn't trust any different make's case to match up to all the openings and buttons.
Alcatel One Touch Fierce 2 cases and screen covers fit the Pop Icon perfectly.

Being someone likely to drop my phone, I've been using a relatively thick, slightly-soft rubber + plastic reinforced case i found on Amazon (it includes a front cover I don't use) in Nov. because the slightly-soft rubber rises above and protects the front edges, cost $9.98 including shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O9K2OQU
My phone is thus slightly heavier than normal and a little more than 1/4" thick with the case, but I'm really happy and comforted with the added protection.

The_Mick said...

Lin, sounds like a bad battery or power-hungry apps running in the background. I've had mine since November and often don't charge it for a couple days. I disconnect it from the charger and place it next to my bed overnight and it's still 90%+ charged in the morning.
The only thing I do not like about the phone is the camera/camcorder quality are nowhere near a top-of-the-line smartphone for distant or dim-light photos, but that's to be expected from a phone costing 1/4 as much. I have a better-than-smartphones 2"x2"x4" 12 MP camera/ HD camcorder.

I accidently set a song as a ringtone. How do I delete a ringtone?

I agree with Lucy. Using my phone with the Net10 unlimited plan and 40 bucks a month for all the smartphone features never felt so good. Have been using mine for 3 months and all is well. Purchased mine at a local grocery store on sale for 89.00$

The ringtone will be deleted when you delete the song.

When you delete the song, that ringtone will be deleted.

Data Connection should be enabled and check if your phone has enough bars on the reception bar. Tracfone tech support told me that you need at least 2 for text or media messages to be delivered. :(

Tap on Settings. Tap on WiFi. Tap on the menu which is the bottom right part of the phone that has four lines. Tap Advanced and uncheck Network Notification to turn it off.

I bought the Alcatel Onetouch Pop 5 just this spring and liked it very much, but now Google's "Tap to Speak" on Messaging is freezing. I can't find out why it's doing this and all I can do is restart. I understand this is happening on some other brands of Android phones, too.

Can the Pop icon phone swipe text? I can't figure it out on mine.

I use the Sandisk micro SD card in my Alcatel Onetouch pop 5 (A564C) and it works fine. And my Mac desktop can even read it.

My Alcatel One touch Pop phone all of a sudden has no sound. The phone rings with vibrate only but no rings. It's like the speaker is muted, but it's not. Not sure what to do. Any thoughts from anyone? Bought the phone in May, 2015. Only a few months old.

I need to do a factory data reset. Will that delete all my tracfone account and remaining minutes?

I have had my phone since Dec 2014 and I love it except for two things. The internal memory is too small 2gbs. I am constantly deleting apps to make room for new apps. This sucks. Also the pre added app with the ICE contacts is awful...I would love to be able to remove it but don't know how...any ideas?? Otherwise, the phone is great!

I agree that 2gbs runs out fast. I've been through the "remove this app to update that app" situation several times. The designers could have at least doubled the internal ram and that would have made all the difference. Unfortunately, you can't remove the ICE or any of the add-ons that came with the phone. I've been through that.

Hsn has them for $100 - $20 rebate with triple minutes, text, data but don@t expect triple on data only updates

I'm not paying $100+ for a phone with only 4g internal memory.

Nice blog and discussion. I'm glad I stumbled on this.

My Dad recently got this phone as his first smart phone. He's having trouble with the screen occasionally freezing, and not responding to any touches/swipes for a few minutes. He can be using various applications on Wifi - gmail, chrome - and it has happened at a couple locations. The only way he was able to get out of it was holding the power button for several seconds to restart the phone. He hasn't loaded any apps on the phone except for the Tracfone app. I don't see others complaining of this... There are no systems updates he seems to be lacking, as best as I could tell.

Any thoughts?

I had a similar issue with my phone as you described a few months ago. I had contacted Tracfone support and the rep sent a number of codes to the phone to reset it. After that, the phone worked fine. You might try their support before anything else.

A factory reset clears out all apps and bring the phone back to its original settings when you purchased it. Your minutes are in your account on the network and won't be affected.
